neuon2003 0 Posted July 20, 2010 Does anyone have a recommendation for a replacement mirror glass? Now that VW have made the OE driver's side obsolete, I have been looking for an alternative but with no luck.I have tried the stick-on ones made by http://www.texautomotive.com (supplied by http://www.auto-performance.co.uk) model number RG192-R, but these are the wrong shape. From reports on here, the Halfords stick-on ones (Code number SRG 246/7 - made by http://www.Summit-auto.com, I think) also appear to be the wrong shape. DDI don't seem to be producing any longer and a pair of OEM ones from ARZ would be over £140, which is insane.
Critical_Mass 10 Posted July 20, 2010 Try the ones on http://www.dubdesignindustries.com/ they do replacement glass, the down side is you lose the heated mirrors, unless you can take the heating element off the standard ones and put them on the new ones. __Andy__ 0 Posted July 20, 2010 maybe try maclaren/tvr parts departments? lol, been thinking about that... but seriously, my mirror glass' are pretty good but im sure in the future getting hold of the mirrors will be a big problem, surely if we got maybe 50 or so members we could approach a company and get some made?? somersetdub 0 Posted July 20, 2010 I'm after a drivers one at mo as the reflective backing has started coming away on mine :-/ Really not keen on using a stick on one either cos I'd know it wasn't quite as it should be

It looks like DDI don't produce them any more. I cannot see them listed on their site nor on the ARZ one.
neuon2003 0 Posted July 21, 2010 maybe try maclaren/tvr parts departments? Yes, looked at this. AFAIR, the glass is about £80 a side, which is too much.

As the driver's side is obsolete, supply of the OE glass is a problem and already very expensive (£70-80). Have since noticed that Summit do a special order service - I'll make some enquiries. Probably would not be heated and most likely be a stick-on, though. Any other options?
Supercharged 2 Posted July 21, 2010 TVR were cheaper than VW a few years ago - I bought both sides for £25 each where VW wanted £25 for the Pass side and £35 for the drivers for some reason!
JMC 0 Posted July 21, 2010 For replacing the heating elements I used an aftermarket self adhesive 12V heating foil. If you search for a company called Conrad electronics online, they are uk based. Go to their search and put in "Heating foil 100x65 mm pair" and you should go straight to the page. With mine they heat the central portion of the glass, which is good enough for me. They do make a larger one "Heating foil 130x70 mm pair" but it uses more power, and I didn't want mine heating all the way to where the adhesive was holding them on to the frame. These bigger ones might work better with a resistor in series to lower the voltage and reduce the temperature rise a bit (even the small ones get hot). Not any longer! For example, £81.08 for the left hand side mirror from http://www.thetvrshop.com.
Guest Posted July 21, 2010 That's not THAT much more than VW was charging for their last few mirrors. Sounds like TVR have realised there is a desperate market out there.

Guest Posted July 21, 2010 just bought one from halfords of all places £10 remove the old bezel and stick it onto the halfords one done :D Either they have substantially changed their glass shape or I bought the wrong ones years ago. I bought a pair back in 2006ish and there is no way I would say they fitted :?

wormy 0 Posted July 21, 2010 I bought some on eBay last year that was correct.. About £10 per side for stick on glasses.. From this seller: http://myworld.ebay.com/newautoparts121 Think they're even "RHD" specced, as they seemed to "zoom" a bit wrong on my LHD car.. Update: Well, fuck me.. They're still listed.. As RHD.. And for £5.5 a piece... :salute: According to their sales ad they also do a non-stick on version.. http://cgi.ebay.com/VW-CORRADO-DRIVER-SIDE-DOOR-WING-MIRROR-GLASS-89-95-/200273649486?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2ea13d5f4e http://cgi.ebay.com/VW-CORRADO-PASSENGER-SIDE-DOOR-WING-MIRROR-GLASS-89-95-/200273651653?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2ea13d67c5 Update2: Picture from my car with them on.. Please don't mock the steering wheel. It's fixed now.. And the rims looks white from the sun/mobile camera.. :dorky:

It seems that the left hand side glass (part number ALG 230) may indeed be wide angle (see here: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220305578443&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_1367wt_1114). Have ordered some, so let's see. No listing by the Ebay seller for Corrado backing plates in his shop. Have found a copy of the manufacturer's (Autoview) catalogue here (http://www.cd-group.com/Components/catalogues.html#autoview) but it is not viewable :(
neuon2003 0 Posted July 21, 2010 That's not THAT much more than VW was charging for their last few mirrors. As of last week: £57.56 including VAT for the left mirror (available on back order), flat glass, part number 535 857 521A :)

Percentage wise maybe but if you really have to have the right part and it is available somewhere then price starts to be less important. I might get some of those ebay stick ons for my 8v though. mattnorgrove 0 Posted July 22, 2010 I have a set of these on now, if you pop out the original glass to properly clean it, you can get them to stick on perfectly in place. Madness paying £80!! neuon2003 0 Posted July 22, 2010 ...if you really have to have the right part and it is available somewhere then price starts to be less important. Hear, hear. But, for once, I am really, really struggling with spending £140+ on two mirror glasses.
monzablau16v 0 Posted February 16, 2011 anyone ever used ebay seller car-parts-market for the mirror glass ? they have a listing for stick on, convex heated glass: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VOLKSWAGEN-CORRADO-1988-1995-CONVEX-HEATED-MIRROR-GLASS-/370483591695?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item56428afa0f working out to be about £10 per side. If someone can vouch for their quality and fit, then i may go for these...Fond believer on trying to keep to OEM/original items.. but £80 for some glass is beyond me... thanks!
