aide 0 Posted August 2, 2011 cheers James, you'll likely be popping back until 2015 :) this is the 3M body schutz black underseal i used, they do a rubberised version as well, which i assume is like the oem.... only found that out afterwards!
aide 0 Posted October 17, 2011 quick update..... - got my front recarro's back from the trimmer, they're not fitted yet, but still chuffed how they came out for the grand sum of £115!! will most likely have to grind and weld the subframes, but that's minor hassle. - invested in a new headlight switch and 24v sump courtesy of the group buy's on here, going to wire the inline fuse when fitting the switch, again well chuffed with both of those. hopefully will be getting sorted with a headlight loom also, so that will be the lights sorted - the real work however has been prepping and painting the car, only have one photo of the prep and dont intend on posting the final results till its done lol, happy with way its going though, but man its a lot of effort! - going to book the MOT for the start of November, yeh its the wrong time of year for getting it back on the road, but I can't go without it any longer! aide 0 Posted October 17, 2011 haha yep i'm going DIY, i'm not obsessive compulsive but i like to think i've some attention to detail so it should turn out ok, better than a lot of standard factory -orange peely - paint jobs anyway :) power to you as i've seen you're making a good go of it on your thread. VW_OwneR_85 2 Posted October 17, 2011 glad to hear your going diy,ah yea cheers mines comming on nicely now iv got to grips with the mig!!. i got painting practice from doing my bumper so that taught me how to sand with a guide coat and prety much the basics realy,i made afew errors but were corrected and i shouldnt make them mistakes again, you doing a full respray? what paint you useing? im useing a 2k primer to cover any filler then a solvent basecoat {LC9Z black magic}and then 2k clearcoat, here check this youtube video out 1+2, very close to what im doing but mines slightly larger areas, arch, roof, rear valance.same principal though,
aide 0 Posted October 27, 2011 well after a year off the road..... she drives! i just dropped her off for a pre MOT check to the local VW specialist, and glad to report the subframe or wheels didn't fall off on the way :) poor quality phone pic, just chuffed its a step nearer the road. Alex_G60_Fanatic 0 Posted October 28, 2011 Chuffed mate! I know the feeling all to well of leaving the house in the C after so long off the road. I hope she goes through ok! Good luck! :D
aide 0 Posted November 9, 2011 I hope she goes through ok! Good luck! :D Cheers Alex, unfortunately things didn't go according to plan! Got the car back from the garage and all was ready for the MOT. Drove it back from the garage, got up early Friday morning as the test was booked for 0800, drove to the MOT test centre, bit of a queue so got in line and waited my turn. Audi in front goes in, 5 minutes later MOT man appears and beckons me in, great stuff I'm thinking "i can't wait to get through here and have a sunny weekend driving around after a year off the road".... i turn the ignition... nothing, frantic ignition turning ensues, still nothing. My sunny daydreams are replaced by a bleak "bollocks". I couldn't chuffing believe it, i've never had starting issues like this before, and the timing couldn't have been worse. Embarassingly I have to push the car out of the queue of waiting cars and phone the AA - gutted! 40 minutes later the AA man and I have checked the spark, coil, coil power, injector pulses and relay 109 with no luck, but just before calling the tow truck we give it a final go... it starts... but not before I've missed my MOT slot. I drive the car home feeling rather feeble.
aide 0 Posted November 11, 2011 decided to change the ignition switch, i can rule it out the intermittent starting issue now, and yeh what a PITA, i just looked at the screw upside down wondering how the hell i was supposed to get a screwdriver to it. when i eventually got the screw out i decided to saw grooves all the way round it so I could use a finger to screw it back in from the gap underneath, way easier now and for the future. the red lines are indicative only lol
aide 0 Posted November 15, 2011 MOT inspector's verdict.... "she's a tight wee thing, so much so i had to take her for a quick spin. wish it was mine" lol Had one advisory on handbrake imbalance, it was 38% and they fail at 40% - for anyone who doesn't know, Northern Ireland MOT's are uncompromising government run inspections in comparison to rest of UK, so chuffed it got through! Sorted an intermittent ABS issue at the weekend on the rears, pleased to say rear hubs are still looking like new after a few thousand miles. KADVR6 0 Posted November 15, 2011 glad you got it all sorted mate, and yeh that ignition switch is a right PITA to do lol

aide 0 Posted November 16, 2011 Cheers for comments, the pictures hide the fact the paintwork needs a lot more rubbing down and polishing, but its getting there slowly, I'm even getting round to finishing the refurb on those vento cups you sold me Karl - only two years after I bought them :)
aide 0 Posted January 21, 2012 (edited) So got a little distracted by the holidays and a new Merc daily driver which i got in December to replace my old 250TD. Since the last update I have managed to get the half leather recaro's fitted, i painted both the sub frames before fitting to stop rust but only took pics of the fabrication. These are only intended as a temporary upgrade until I can get the real deal, but am pleased with how they look. Bit of hassle getting the subframes fabricated, especially so these recaros sit at the same height as the original seats but enjoyed getting them sorted! Also fitted the upgraded headlight loom bought of kur2y stuffing the relays inside a maplin box, also did the headlight switch fuse mod for peace of mind too. :) Edited March 28, 2013 by aide
aide 0 Posted October 11, 2012 crikey its been a while since i updated, between work and a new house progress hasn't been as swift as i'd hoped, nevertheless i've got a few things completed and still progress on the boil; - got some of alexg60 new window rollers fitted, window rattle lessened - new parcel shelf straps and new door pins fitted, door closing definitely exhibits more of a clunk now - fitted some new 5.25" door speakers and replaced the tweeters, doesn't add any base but tone is certianly improved - fitted new door windows seals, pricey at £60 each, lessened the window rattle to practically zero now - cleaned up and fitted the moonroof, then adjusted it suit the opening, fits well and well pleased with it. what a ball ache getting the headlining out was though.... and i have to do it all over again as one of the cables snapped a few weeks ago :bonk: - i've refurbed the vento cups in a mid grey metallic, only have a pic of the rim refurb at present though - i've also spent some time on the paintwork, now this may be controversial but I've basically been repainting with a gloss roller using the rustoleum method, all in i've probably spent £100 on supplies and am probably 5% away from getting the car finished, its taken a lot of time and effort but i'm rather pleased with the results demonstrated by the couple of snaps below. yep there's imperfections, but i never intended for this car to be a show queen, i have it to get me to the surf and to satisfy my tinkering tendency's. tentonhammer 10 Posted October 11, 2012 Impressive build thread, just stumbled on it over a cup of tea and have now read he lot! Tempted to try some Deox-C to remove small amounts of developing rust (not much rust at all on my C fortunately). Can it be directly applied / reapplied to say a inner wheel arch and left over night etc or is it only for dipping?
aide 0 Posted October 11, 2012 thanks for comments, its a bit of a slowburner build! deox-c do a gell, i believe you apply it pretty thick (a few mm) then cover it with cling film to stop it evaporating and leave it overnight, in the morning you clean it up and wire brush, then reapply it again if some rust remains. could suit for what you're thinking. tentonhammer 10 Posted October 11, 2012 You're right - Deox Gel http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RUST-REMOVER-DEOX-GEL-/251162106070?pt=UK_Car_Accessories_Car_Care_Cleaning&hash=item3a7a6d98d6 For larger applications or parts that can't be submerged. aide 0 Posted March 28, 2013 been flat out with DIY so attention firmly elsewhere, but decided to treat myself to one of the lewis carbon bonnets which got unpacked today - well pleased, and genuinely shocked and how light it is, hoping its going to make the vr feel much less nose heavy :) car hasn't been started since December, but I've a bit of a hunger back to get it on the road again - roll on spring. aide 0 Posted May 19, 2013 Got the car booked in the for a pre mot check on Tuesday, and then proper MOT on Friday. Stripped the lighting loom out as I've no sidelights with it, and then swapped the recarro seats for standard, decided to hoover it whilst the seats were out and thought it looked kinda nice mid hoover :)
