vr6corrado 0 Posted February 9, 2004 After a run on the motorway last night (could be coincidence) when I stopped at traffic lights and let the car roll very slowly on a slope with clutch down and no brakes I can hear a noise from the rear driver side of the car. It's a bit like when the front brakes squeak but much deeper, more like when a bus has dodgy brakes. Is this the handbrake seizing? Any ideas would be much appreciated. Cheers. vr6corrado 0 Posted February 9, 2004 Having had a look at more posts, I guess it's more likely to be the wheel bearing?
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted February 10, 2004 Sounds like a rear caliper becoming sticky.....
vr6corrado 0 Posted February 11, 2004 Thanks Kev, so do I need new rear calipers? What's the likely cost?
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted February 11, 2004 MK4 ones were about £50 each last time I enquired and seem the way to go....but you need to make up some new brake lines, which isn't too much hassle if you've got the right tools. You might not need new ones yet, try lubricating the handbrake linkages etc first.

vr6corrado 0 Posted March 2, 2004 Finally had it looked at and I have been told by a garage I trust that the calipers are operating ok. Releasing on both sides etc The guy in the garage also tested the rear brakes (rear wheels on the rollers and braking using the foot brake) and said it wouldn't pass the MOT. :( He recommended new rear discs and calipers. The noise only comes from the rear driver side and the caliper doesn't get *really* hot. Handbrake is pretty useless though! Not sure if I should get a second opinion, any ideas? woody 0 Posted March 3, 2004 Hand brake cables are £ 18 including VAT for both sides from VW. Got some yesterday one side of mine was Cr*p. 16VG60 fitted Mk4 calipers to my C last year and they made such a difference. Dont forget to by the banjo clips
