G60 won't rev, black smoke

Recommended Posts

Hi, just swapped in a replacement engine as my last one burnt out a piston due to it running bad!!! This new engine I haven't messed with the timing at all, it's all standard apart from a 3.1 bar fuel pump and 4 branch manifold. I had a bolt shear in the head so it's blowing at the minute.

The engine idles fine but will not accelerate, or if left for 2 mins it struggles to even rev, tries to die when given gas! The timing is fine and the engine ran fine in the original car, I tried the supplied ecu which made no difference!

Surely a blowing exhaust wouldn't cause this??? From the black smoke I think iv got a fueling issue but I can't figure out what! Can anyone help me?

Yes a blowing exhaust will cause that.

The lambda sensor downstream of the blowing point on the exhaust is telling engine to add extra fuel as it thinks (thanks to the blow) that there is not enough fuel and too much air.

pull the o2 sensor plug...if the engine runs normaly then yes thats the problem with the manifold leak

otherwise , check you havent pinched any vac hoses and that the ecu one is on the correct nip

Hi cheers for that, iv swapped injectors today and redone ignition timing, making it slightly better.

It's an innovate afr wideband that is wired up to ecu as per their instructions, unplugged it and it made little difference.

If you gently accelerate it seems ok till you get near WOT then it struggles, I came to the conclusion it must be something to with the leak. Thanks for answers as it makes me feel more confident something else isn't knackered!

I'll sort the leak and see how it goes then.

Thanks again :)

Right from the start, iv put a g60 from a rado into my mk2 golf '89 driver.

It ran fine when first started but idle was rougher than should be, would bounce abit then rest the sometimes backfire and struggle to rev for a little bit. This engine eventually melted a piston due to pre ignition while I was fiddling with things.

Iv got another engine in that crank pulley came loose on and mushed end of crank, iv swapped crank from blown engine into this, everything fine and nice and all torqued up.

Got it running tonight and it's same as original, idle abit rough, unplug blue temp sensor and revs pick up and then it bounces from 1200-1000 rpm.

When driving it misses upto 3-4k then picks up and shoots off, drive it with temp sensor unplugged and it goes fine all way through but flat spots around 5k sometimes, also seems abit down on power but it does have CTN box on so don't know if that effects it?

It's got a 3.1 bar aftermarket fuel pump, 3 bar fpr with green injectors, wideband lambda reading 7.4 but I think iv set it up wrong, 4 branch with 2 boxes other than that it's standard with pretty much all new parts. Ignition timing is 6btdc.

Iv tried ecu's but made no difference and now I'm starting to think it's my own wiring, ecu relay feed?

Anyone got any ideas???
