slightly disapointed...Got whooped by a Locust RS

Recommended Posts

I was driving back from a family do last night. I was alone, driving thru town with a bright xenon glare in my rear view mirror. I respected the speed limits as there is a camera before the run up to the dual carridge way. 1 lane turns to 2 then dual carridge way opens up to a clear run. I see these bright lights advancing towards me. I floor it!!

My G60 has been running well these last few months and with the cooler air it scoops into its charger it feels a bit nippier should be good for about 170 bhp even though the charger is due a service not bad considering its on 211K ........

anyway.. I wasn't gaining any distance on these bright lights chasing me.. Im on full chatter, hit 6000 rpm, slipped it up a cog .....and before i could reach 70mph the fecker bolted past me on a curve. I thought my G60 was quick...........until i watched thing thing zoom past. it had so much acceleration...

It was one of those Ford Focus RS thingys.. and it wasn't the police  Feckin quick!! big turbo and all that gubbins.

Is it this kind of situation that makes ppl upgrade upto a 20VT???...coz im really thinking it now. :brickwall:

A focus rs is 300 bhp though! But little events like that don't put you off doing the conversion!

Gotta put things in perspective! Focus RS is big power, and easily tunable for bigger power. Far more modern car, modern engine, etc...

Somewhere on a Ford forum there is an RS owner posting a thread along the lines of...

"I was booting it hard and I was really struggling to catch the guy up. I finally managed to do it and as I got close I realised the car I was chasing was nearly 20 years old and with almost half the power of my RS. I was a little disappointed tbh so what can I do to get more power? The fekin thing looked damn nice too... never knew those sciroccos were so capable for their age"

Can you think of your old corrado with 300bhp coming out of a roundabout with a focus rs up your bum you hang around at 60 spoiler goes up you floor it bye bye focus piss yourself laughing as you look retro cool spent about £6000 including the price of the car and mr focus looks silly with his exhausted dump valve hissing

I realise that mate and i had no idea what it was until it went past me.. I cant compare the 2 cars and its no contest with a slightly fettled C but....that focus really did catch me with my pants down!!

Its just made me think i want something more modern and tunable under my bonnet as well. I wouldn't go for an R32 conversion because I think that i would be disappointed if after all that work i still got blown away by mr Focus.. so maybe something a little less volitile and less expensive.. the 20VT still sounds good and theres more of them about than replacement G60's.. and there very tunable too.

1.8t is the best conversion. you can get huge power cheap mate I had a passat 1.8t spent about £2000 and had 320 bhp it seems the best way forward for a g60 look on you tube for ideas theres a mk1 golf with 700bhp from 1.8t . If you go ahead with the 1.8t mate source a bam engine code from a s3 cupra r tt 225 they are the best internals and safe for 400bhp so cheaper in the long run .

I know this feeling 8)

They are very nice bits of kit though, 2.5t and an £800 mod away from 400bhp.

1.8t is the easiest way for more power, but been done to death. Why not turbo your G60 engine

Assuming the Cosworth is the base, 100hp more from the stock turbo is pure fantasy, let alone the lowly 220 odd hp STs.

It's the same with these people claiming 350hp from a remapped Edition 30 MK5 GTI, utter cobblers. Not aimed at you, but some people throw random and unfeasible horspower numbers around like sweets these days

best ford in ages, especially RS500, but still a bit chavvy and LOOK AT ME EVERYONE

Yeah, Ford haven't been subtle with the RS, especially the Lime green one. Christ those things are like a rag to a bull for me. If I see one race up to my bumper, that's all the encouragement I need and the Lime green bully suddenly turns to a shade of cherry red with it's tail between it's legs

The new rs comes out the factory with 270 bhp, not the claimed 300 bhp. Not doubting they are rspid as hell though, just trying to make everyone feel better :p

Interesting. Is this from customers dynoing their cars, or an admission from Ford?

Heres the dyno of the passat when it had a custom revo, milltek, intercooler, gt28rs turbo upgrade , did induction and maf shortly after and final figures were 316 bhp but did bend head bolts and that was that so go bam its the best one of the lot. I have a vr6 now love the nosie so much not to bothered about all out power although i do have a few plans for the next few months A 300bhp rado must be epic. Read about kevhaywires motor must be a joy of a machine to drive and so much fun against such cars as focus rs .

thats the good thing with them though, you know you are going to have a race which i like sometimes, get all excited! sometimes i get excited with other cars (like porsches etc) and its the slowest driver around, some old bloke or even a old lady driver, its a big let down

(not that i drive around looking to race, but there is a time and place for these things  )

im not really a racer but jeez it gives a buzz when matched with the right opponent.. I like to just cruise but have more than ample power on tap for overtaking and a little tait a tait under the right circumstances.. gotta agree with big ben.. i whizz past porkers and M3's M5's all the time and they dont bother with you... Mr focus RS however is always up tustle.

A friend of mines works at a tuning place, a volvo specialist called hlm tuning, they are well known in the volvo "scene" and they do a lot of rolling road days etc. Basically when the new RS was released they were approached by a company who were using one as a demo car. They had hlm re-map it as the owner had written a hell of a lot of his own maps for volvos, and as the rs engine is effectively a volvo lump it seemed fitting.

So after rolling it initially before any mapping it produced 270, fresh from factory. I'll see if i can dig out the video. I know different rolling companies claim different figures, but i doubt it to be out by 30bhp.

Makes you wonder.

Losses are never as low as 10%. I wish they were though :D

It wouldn't surprise me if they're only 270hp. I remember Evo testing one when it first came out and they were a little underwhelmed by it's performance, even taking into account it's lard arse 1470Kg kerb weight, which for a FWD hatch is ridiculous!! A MK4 R32 is nearly 30Kg lighter!!

I've 'raced' a few on the roads too, in standard trim I assume because I barely had to go into boost to keep up with one. They're not quick at all for the numbers they claim to have.

Evo also dynoed an RS6 (the V10) and that was well down on power aswell but all the other VAG turbo engines knock out loads more than the book figures  . Seems to be a bit of a lottery these days as to what ACTUAL power you will get!

Kev, I'd be happy if mine came off a rr showing over 180bhp!! Given age of car and that a few horse's jump the fence over time  I'd be gutted though if it came out in the 170's or sum'it.

As for the racing, yeah, I love a little flutter, but when it's someone in a very quick car, scooby's, evo, porsche M3 type, I'm happy to go nuts for a few sec's, Cole Trickle stylee  , give'm a bit've a spook  ,

just so they know the old girls still got it!!

Then just little wave maybe and slip into the masses. Not worth charging along really.

Their cars faster. Fair play to'em. End of.

ey dont knock doing an r32 conversion, i have and love it every day, mine is around 280bhp, so not a massive amount but i love it every day, and i comfortably dispatched of a remappd focus rs with a claimed 350bhp. those cars are as said heavy, feel cumbersome and the ponies under the bonnet dont feel rampant like german ones. i realise a 20vt conversion produces more power for less outlay, but for me the 6pot character is the appeal.....the noise and torque!! :D ........i had my corrado weighed and with me in it and half a tank fuel it was 1205kg! 232bhp/tonne! so not slow...
