Rams 0 Posted December 23, 2010 My car is soon to be re sprayed, the place I get all my bits from specialise in Lechler paint and the body shop I will probably use prefer ICI and they can mix it on site. My buddy who's into his cars in a big way said he would be doing his in Standox and had used House of Kolor before. Just want to share these thoughts and see if im going with the best brand, more than likely ICI. So far I've heard its very good quality and but quite expensive. For people that had their car re sprayed, what paint did you use and have you been impressed with it?

Kevin Bacon 5 Posted December 23, 2010 I've always had great results with Standox. The paint quality is only half the story though. Poor preperation will make even the best paints look schitt :D
Supercharged 2 Posted December 23, 2010 The main problem now is everything is water based - one of the reasons MK2 Golfs and Corrado's are so rust resilient is the hard 2k paint which is almost like an enamle.
Rams 0 Posted December 23, 2010 I've always had great results with Standox. The paint quality is only half the story though. Poor preperation will make even the best paints look schitt :D Totally agree, I basically had all the work re done by a professional to ensure my finish was the best it could be. I just wish I had given the car to peter from the outset to flare the arches etc as his work is so much neater. As he's a painter he knows how the finish should be from welding, shaping and how filler is applied. Small things like the bonnet jets, when my welder did them, the underside was a horrid finish, even though it was covered by the plastic trim that sits in the space. After we changed the bonnet, Peter did the welding and the underside was a smooth perfect finish. The proof will be in the pudding and I plan to buy a decent camera and you guys - my worthy judges can tell me what you think :salute: You are the second knowledgable person to recommend Standox, I will ask the body shop about it
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted December 23, 2010 All the highly regarded bodyshops in my area use Standox. Glasurit is another name that's supposed to be good. I think Shaun (StormchargedVR6) mentioned that Lechler to me once and he's a car painter by trade. He does have exceptionally high standards though! Pat_McCrotch 0 Posted December 27, 2010 Another vote for Standox :)
PhatVR6 0 Posted December 27, 2010 I didn't realise ICI still existed!? When I had my Mk2 golf done many years ago the guy used Akzo Nobel paint by Sikkens. Very expensive, but awesome stuff.
Rams 0 Posted December 27, 2010 Will speak to the sprayer about Standox.... This means I will have to buy it myself. I will see some cars they have done and ask their opinion on Standox. I dont want to be to difficult as I they will be receiving the car all prepped and ready for paint. The Lechler stuff is about 40 plus £'s a litre through my guys, the body shop want about 4 to 5 litres, added with thinners is nearly 10 litres. I 'm told the ICI including thinners will be roughly £300 £350. Anyone know the rough costs for Standox in mystic Blue pearl per litre  ? Car is nearly ready for base coat now, few more days and she will be on route for fresh paint!
KipVR 1 Posted December 28, 2010 Standox if you're staying with a regular oe colour. House of Kolor if you're going custom, but note down the mix, you can get lost in the shades/flakes etc!
