New Storm

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone

Just purchased a Mystic Blue storm and thought I'd send in a post to say hello as I expect I'll be taking advantage of the many years of corrado ownership contained within this forum in the years to come.

Just sent the Solitudes away for a refurb and treated her to a 12k service but plenty more to do.

Here's a pic.

Thanks Rams.

Yes, one owner with full annual VAG service history and never been modified in any way.

Service required the following over and above the normal 12k service:

adjustment of gear selector cable - 1st gear was where reverse should be and almost made me walk away from the purchase

replacement of water pump

adjustment of wheel bearing

I was also advised that the rear axle bushes were starting to perish but at 340 fitted I decided to leave that for another six months. Cost of service and items listed above came in at 580 from the local deal which wasn't cheap but I feel I have to stick with to keep the VAG service history going!

Gave the car a good clean with the wheels off and on stands and it looks solid enough although there's a dent or scratch on just about every panel and some surface rust around the wheel arches so plenty work to be done.

I plan to keep as original as possible.

Thanks gents.

I did notice that there were a few Corrado owners in Aberdeen and may well be in touch for some local help and advice.

In fact wouldn't mind locating a good paint shop for a quote if any owners from this area would like to recommend any. I have used Kinghorn Motors for a full glass out respray in the past and whilst it really wasn't cheap and they took so long to complete the job leaving my car outside in the snow between working on it !!! the finished paintwork really is impressive . I just can afford to spend the same kind of cash at the moment and just want to get the rust sorted and a bit of a tidy up.

Would really appreciate any recommendations.

Other than Kinghorn there is Castlepark in Ellon and Kirkton Auto Body in Banchory seem to get good reviews. Other than mine I know of 4 other Corrado's owners in Aberdeen and have seen a few other kicking about. I didnt see you on Friday night did on Greenwell road?

I have noticed that the forum tend to use the title "stealers" instead of "dealers" and I guess with good reason but my thinking is that these guys probably do know these cars better than most and I feel kind of forced into keeping the VAG service history going. Let's see if I keep this view when something big goes ping!

Spent a good few hours cleaning her yesterday and coming along nicely but probably still got another 5 days or so worth of cleaning work to do. Not sure if it's normal to enjoy cleaning a car so much, but I do!

Bought some Corrado car mats off of e-bay which were advertised as original and whilst quite happy with the quality the rear mats just don't look to be the right size. The front mats fit quite snug but the back mats look too small. Anyone tell me if I have been ripped off or if this is right?

I'll be honest unless I know the guy working on my car I wouldnt take a car as old as the Corrado to the main dealers. There have been many discussions about keeping a VW service history and almost everyone said that it is not that important anymore. The dealers are basically only interetsed in new cars and trying to get money from you from additional items that are apparently needing replaced. If your prepaired to pay the £80+ an hour labour then fair enough but these cars dont need specialist treatment, any good garage should be able to work on them. Just my 2p.

Coullstar, Thanks for your comments. I have actually used Bavaria (German Car Specialist) in Hutcheon Street for over 18 years instead of going to the main dealer and have been really quite impressed with the quality of workmanship but your comment about looking for additional work rings true with these guys as well. Not 100% sure which way I'm going to go with this yet but thought I'd give the VW dealers a chance to impress me !!!???

Solitudes are finished (done by Laws tyres in Aberdeen who send them away to pristine) and getting fitted again tomorrow. I'll post up some pics once I have them.

I have also ordered new front indicator lights to replace the cracked set that are in at the moment and also noticed whilst cleaning the engine bay that the PCV valve (had no idea what this was a couple of days ago but yet again this excellent forum has educated me) was completely disconnected so called the VW dealers who serviced it a couple of weeks back and they have asked me to take it in saying that they don't know how they could have missed this (not a great first impression !!!)

Next step is to get a couple of quotes for a tidy up of the bodywork (which seems to have a scratch or dent on every single panel as well as some rust around the wheel arches!) and will try the two bodyshops recommended below (thanks again coullstar) as well as Kinghorn who carried out a full glass out restoration of my other baby. I'd love to go the full hog again but simply can't afford it.

I'll keep you posted.

the PCV is normally cheaper to get from Ford(shared with the Galaxy V6 aka Sharan VR6),as VW want you to buy all the extra hose, whereas you can get the PCV itself from Ford(circa £35)

VR6Storm, Thanks and clocked this when reading up on it via this site. Going to see what the dealers say and then decide what action to take.

slazr6, Welcome and excellent choice of car!

As for hints and tips I'm also a new owner so very much learning myself but this site is just brilliant and I have already had some help and advice from the more long standing members. Suggest that you start up a new thread with a couple of pics of your new baby and take it from there. I'll be keeping this thread updated on my progress and more than happy to let you know any details on the work I undertake.

Guys, Quick update with photo's to follow as soon as the snow clears!

The solitudes are back from pristine and looking great, not cheap but the quality is excellent. Just keeping my eyes peeled for a cheap set of Speedlines to use during the winter months as the Solitudes look to good to use now!

I took the opportunity of giving the wheelarches and underside of the car a right good clean whilst the wheels were off and it was sitting on stands. I took off the front wheel arch covers and used a jet wash to get right in about. It's good to know that that I've now removed the majority of the mud and dirt than can sit and rot away your car without you seeing it.

Have spent the last week giving the leather the first clean and feed it's had in 16 years using Meguiars rich leather aloe cleaner (step1) and Meguiars rich leather aloe conditioner (step2) and it's looking fantastic.

I have fitted new and original Corrado mats. The fronts mats look great but the rear mats just don't fit very well. I was going to send them back but was advised by a member of this forum that this is the norm so just going to keep them now.

I took the car back in to the VW dealers to get their take on the PCV valve issue and they advised me that it wasn't the PCV valve but one of the breather pipes that had bust. They didn't have a replacement and would have to order but have said that they will repair this free of charge as it should have been spotted during the 12k service (may even have been them who bust it). I'll keep you posted on this as it goes back in again on Friday.

I visited Kirkton motor body repairs in Banchory for a glass out respray and was pretty impressed with the owner (Phil) and got the chance to look round a Boxter and Golf that he was working on, both of which looked good. The price he quoted was also OK and I think this is where I'll be going at the end of March when he has the space (also a good sign) I told him about this forum and that I would be posting up my thoughts and pics on the workmanship, should I decide to go there.

I've also made a bit of a start on cleaning the engine bay but with the snow now back and with it plummeting temperatures I think this is going to have to wait a while longer before I get going again.

I have purchased two new front indicator lamps and the rear wiper arm cover as well as a couple of second hand plastic rear seat belt covers.

So all in all it's coming along nicely and hope to get it in good shape for some summer driving.
