Bad luck, again

Recommended Posts

On the way to work this morning after replacing the cv joints on the offside of the car and the ball joint pinch bolt on the nearside decided to shear the thread of the bolts resulting in this. Not a pleasant experience at 45mph and with no warning. Then the lovely RAC took 4 hours to recover it back home and charging me an additional £100 pound for recovery as it was further then 10 miles from my home, so lesson learnt back with the AA next year.

Bugger, not good! That must have scared the bajesus out of you? Thank god you didn't end up in a ditch, or stoved into the side of a HGV.

Mate, AA, RAC.... they're as bad as eachother. I hear Greenflag are good?

Will have to check out greenflag then. The driveshaft nuts are easy to get off if you have a bit of scaffold pipe, they are tight. Make sure when it goes back together that the torque washer is the right way round and the new nut is tighten up to 195lb ft.

Thanks for the heads up, thought I would need a very large breaker bar. I'll have to get my hands on a larger torque wrench though as I don't think FT will cut it!

The bolt sheared the threads where the locking nut was holding onto, and yeah i was suprised to see it, can only really put it down to an old bolt or a weakness in the bolt. Ive sheared an m24 bolt before at work because of a flaw in the bolt.

But on the plus side a new bolt cv gaitor and tracked up and its back on the road, just the wing to sort out at the weekend now.

glad to hear it's on the mend. I inherited a mk2 jetta from my old dear cos the exact same thing happened to her and a pothole. A bit of driveshaft love and some fixings and all was well again.

If you're planning to keep the car a few years, I would recommend doing what I did and building up a complete replacement front subframe with all the running gear (and a PAS rack if you can) and then just swapping out one weekend. It's all just bolts so it doesn't take too long :)
