engine 'flush'

Recommended Posts

i mentioned to the guy that did my exhaust that i had rattly tappets and he suggested i 'flush' the engine, and that it normally helps. Is he talking about do-coking? i've heard mixed things about that, in that in older cars it can dis-lodge stuff thats blocking little holes/cracks in things and make the engine run worse.

any advice?

he means to use an aditive in the oil to flush out built up crap...some say it works, some say it dislodges dirts and makes things worse

ive had good results using 1 ltr of atf(auto trans fluid) in the oil for a few days then a oil change

im not sure id do it on a g60 though??

I'd have the sump off, check the oil pump pick up for crap. Whilst in there change the big ends, as it only costs a tenner for the bearings. Oil change and see what happens then.

the boys at vwccgb recommend comma 'easi engine flush', i use it myself on my 140k+ 1.8 16v. the great thing about it is, you can put it in and then run the car for a week before changing the oil. it's very good for rattley tappets and i need some now for a sticky valve ! leaving it in for a couple a hundred miles really does shift the crap, personally i've had no probs with the engine running badly after. finding somewhere that stocks it may be tricky, it may be better 'up north', independent auto factors are probably your best bet. hope this helps

yeah thats how mine is to, if its a warm day, it rattles a bit for a few seconds then quietens down, if its cold though it rattles for ages. Someone on here said its something to do with things expanding as they warm up, and so stopping rattling.

It's also to do with oil thickness. When the oil is very cold, it's much thicker, and it takes a longer time for it to squeeze into the tappets - hence it takes longer before the rattle goes...

As for the up-and-running noise level, that's more likely caused by psychological effects. If it's a generally noisy day you think your car is quieter than usual.. If you're thrashing around in the middle of the countryside then it's going to sound loud...
