monVR6 0 Posted March 1, 2004 My alignment and set-up seems to knock itself out really easily. I've not hit anything or done anything untoward - and pretty much everything has been replaced recently - any ideas? Also, I've heard the C has unequal length drive shafts (???) and one is weighted to balance these. If this is out/missing, it can make the steering feel heavier in one direction over the other. Kevin Bacon 5 Posted March 3, 2004 Might be your ball joints. Mine's doing odd things at the moment too. One minute the steering is weighty and direct and the next it's sloppy and loose. I have some new VAG BJs and a PAS pump on Standby for my visit to Stealth next saturday....I'll let you know what the outcome is. Most FWD cars have unequal length driveshafts and I've yet to own a VW that actually has that rubber damper fitted to the longer of the two Driveshafts, but I am aware some VWs did have them. My bushes were replaced about 18 months ago, before my handling problems turned up, but it occurs to me that the garage I WAS using have almost certainly replaced them with GSF specials.. Kevin Bacon 5 Posted March 3, 2004 Not sure to be honest Matt, but I've asked Vince to get me VAG ones. I always use VAG where suspension components are concerned! I would have thought rear axle bushes are quite specialist and not made by pattern people, although obviously they're made FOR VAG by company X, so chances are they're the same compound of rubber. What sort of cost could I be looking at for having both these bits sorted? At the moment, I am frustrated as despite spending loads on getting the handling right - it still isn't !! Kevin Bacon 5 Posted March 4, 2004 You'd know if the WBs were worn as you'd get non-tyre related rumblings around corners and as the load is taken off the bearing as you straighten up, they go quiet again. Worn BJs cause a weaving sensation as you move in and out of lorry tyre ruts.....the car feels like it wants to go in the opposite direction to the steering input. WBs are hard to diagnose as you can only really check them by levering a huge bar between the wishbone and hub...and even then that just indicates static play...when the full weight of the car is on them, other forces come into play.....bloody things...if there is any doubt, there is no doubt..... Spoke to Vince this morning about these rear axle rubbers (and the Schrick!) and he confirms the bushes G&SF sell are genuine ones. He also said the Powerflex bushes are pretty good but you lose the passive rear steer. Same with the Vibratechnics ones.... K Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
