VR6 Stalling!

Help Guys

 

Whilst driving my VR6 around everything is fine but as soon as I come to stop at lights or a junction etc the C just dies the revs fall straight away and the tell tale red light is on!

 

This problem does not happen all the time only occassionaly, but it can happen whilst the engine is still cold or after a good run (2 Hours+)

Could be the ISV but I replaced mine to cure the same problem, but the problem remains. A well setup VR *should* pull the revs down in a controlled and graceful manner when hitting the clutch pedal......my revs drop like a brick and sometimes the ISV just struggles to catch them, and will, on occasion stall out on me.

 

I would investigate all your inlet side of things and check for split hoses, don't outrule the brake servo hose as they've been known to crack/split.

 

This is a very common and annoying problem that has afflicted pretty much all VWs since the MK1 and the advent of the pesky Bosch idle filler valves.

 

Hope you sort it, but start with an ISV clean out, replace the dashpot behind the throttle lever (little bellows) and adjust it too to move higher up to catch the throttle earlier on overrun. Then check all your inlet side of things and then lastly the MAF sensor.

I had just the same problem- clean out the ISV with carb cleaner- when you take it off you will see how coked up it is inside. Then clean out the throttle body- take care to clean around the lip of the throttle 'plate' so it seals perfectly when closed. Cured mine immediately- its never stalled since :D

Thanks lads where abouts is the ISV located is it next to the throttle body?

On the right hand side of the tb but it is concealed by a black plastic cover. You have to pull the ht leads out and remove the cover to expose the isv.

daft question, but does the cover on a Vr6 just clip off? or is there a special way to taking it off (without breaking it, as I have a habit of doing this to stuff :oops: )

You need an 8mm spline key I'm afraid. Halfords sell them, so guess where you're going tomorrow morning :-)

 

Edit: Get a tin of carb cleaner whilst in you're in there.

A hex-key (allen key) fits it too.

Another tip that I learned the hard way- You will need to disconnect the air trunk 'elbow' which is takes the air from the filter into the throttle body, when you manouver it out of the way to get inside the throttle body- make sure you don't force the small pipe that goes from the middle of the elbow into the engine block- it tears very easily.

 

You will also need the tool to take the plug leads off- Some people say it came with the car- I had to buy mine from a dealer- cost £20 but its a decent quality tool.

Just pull the leads out of the coilpack.
