Timo. 0 Posted March 13, 2004 Went to collect a new 'hall sender' for my vr6 this morning in a vain attempt to cure my perfomance issues. The short journey from the Vw garage back to my girlfriends house (a mere 2 miles) = one split coolant pipe + a shed load of steam. Felt like putting the car on autotrader and be done with it. Just one big money pit that never gets filled. However, my theory is.... Yesterday I replaced the expansion cap because the car was loosing a little amount over time and reading another thread the other day pointed to the cap being the culprit. It was rather blocked up by the looks of it. So, new cap on = bit more pressure in the system, probably the right amount = weak, 10 year old oil cooler coolant pipe going, "I've had enough of this, I'm splitting". Car is now in pieces after a rather sedate drive home and I'll have it back on the round on tuesday at the earliest. What a nightmare. Any views or comments welcome, some support would be nice  cheers simon

The short journey from the Vw garage back to my girlfriends house (a mere 2 miles) = one split coolant pipe + a shed load of steam. Felt like putting the car on autotrader and be done with it. Just one big money pit that never gets filled. I don't think many of us have not thought that at one time or another during ownership of our lovely Corrados! Especially me who's spent £5K on mine over a year. Half of it upgrades, the rest repairs and or replacement of worn bits here and there. It's gradually getting there and I'll know damn well it will all have been in vain in a few years to come! However, my theory is.... Yesterday I replaced the expansion cap because the car was loosing a little amount over time and reading another thread the other day pointed to the cap being the culprit. It was rather blocked up by the looks of it. Sounds feasible but those oil cooler hoses just go without warning sometimes! K
Timo. 0 Posted March 13, 2004 Any idea how much the pipes will be. Gonna replace both of them. ta timo
kvwloon 0 Posted March 13, 2004 Hang in there mate, although you have my sympathy! Sometimes i feel the same, but still dont think i would be really happy to let my C go. Anyway, after spending a shed load of money why sell it to let someone else get the benefit? These cars are just getting to 'that' age I reckon, where you either sell before you have to spend loads, or spend loads and keep it. Never a good idea to spend loads and THEN sell it for someone else to get the benefit! Get it fixed and then go for a long drive on a sunny day, should sort you out! If that fails take a test drive in some newer soul-less Euorbox or Jap car :) Remember that Top Gear edition with the C in it!
Timo. 0 Posted March 14, 2004 Cheers, I would never sell it anyway, every!!!! never, never, never. No matter what. Just gets me down a little. But it is now going like a train. Its just that its now in pieces and its raining cats and dogs here. Poor thing  Should have it sorted soon though. I do enjoy being able to fix it myself. I know the car like the back of my hand now. 8) ta timo
edd 0 Posted March 14, 2004 tell me about it bro mine drives me round the twist just one thing after another but nothing ever major... yet!!.. touch wood. But enough to keep her off the road for a day each week. Anyhow set of pipes for my 16v were expensive piced at nearly 70 quid for four not even complete set but i did go to VAG cos i needed em quick. Moaned and moaned to the parts guy though and he gave me them for £48. Well chuffed. Im certain my pipe issues came after i changed top rad hose. Pulled the top collar off oil cooler as i pulled pipe off. So new cooler was required, just rusty and bu**ered. Anyway transpired it had leaked oil throughout cooling system and degraded all the rubber. went through one pipe a week for the next month!! so annoying. Do therm all at the same time if you can afford it bro. Still havent sorted my water loss yet hey, did the expansion cap stop the leakage until the pipes blew!! Timo. 0 Posted March 14, 2004 "did the expansion cap stop the leakage until the pipes blew!!" Emm, didn't have change to find out. Its only a really low water loss, probably need a week of driving to suss whether it worked or not. Pretty sure the cap was the problem. The new cap definitely made the pipe go boom!! The weakness was there though and it could have been much, much worse. It only steamed out rather than completely bursting and dropping the entire contents of the cooling system. Still annoying though. Want to get out in it now that its going soooo smoothly and rapidly  timo P.S. the expansion cap is only a fiver, worth a shot! Timo. 0 Posted March 15, 2004 Got the pipes orderd today. £6.50 each    . Had to pay the premium though to get them there by tomorrow. So that's another £5. But as I was told, the premium is applied to every part you order. I ordered two parts so that's £10!!!! . The pipes are only 6 inches long for christ sake. Moaned at the parts guy and he said he would give me the parts trade price so that'll save a few quid if I'm lucky. Better than nothing though. Cant wait to get her back on the road. Roll on tommorrow!!! timo
