Does mk3 aircon fit a rado?

Recommended Posts

I've done a search and can't find anything?

Just wondering as the donor car I'm buying has it fitted, would be nice to know if I should keep it!

I'm sure the C aircon switches etc will be expensive, but it would be nice to have.

I cant answer that but I think most folk who do the conversion tend to use Passat Parts, Have a look at PurpleTom's Members gallery I think he did it????

If not i'm sure someone will know better than me.

The heater box can be made to fit, but the pipework and wiring are different and the condenser is the wrong shape. Since the heater box is the rarest bit you can probably piece together the rest though. I have the mk3 heater box in mine, but never got round to fitting any of the rest of it.

I've got Passat climate control in mine, it's not that difficult an install although there are a lot of new pieces to squeeze in there. I'm sure that Mk3 Golf kit would go in just the same, they're all built around the same platform, no reason for VW to redesign the wheel every time just because the body's a different shape? I'm currently looking at options for a new condenser in mine as I had to carve lumps out of my slam panel to fit the Passat one and I've never been happy with it......when I find the ideal one I'll maybe do a build thread but it'll probably be a lot later this year before I get to that stage!

Condenser off a MK3 VR6 fits nicely onto the Corrado VR6 rad but the top pipe fouls the slam panel - there would need to be some cutting involved to get it to fit. Compressor should be the same (make sure you get the correct one - there is a 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder one) Pipework will likely be different, wiring too but if you have a VR6 with a later fan controller, it will be a lot easier. The pressure switch plugs into the drier on a MK3 system which is a nice touch as it makes getting custom pipework easier (you should still get a new drier). Piritek will be able to make up any pipework you need.

If you're going to attempt such big surgery then Climatronic may be a better option :-) For the money you'd spend on the Corrado switches (if you can find any), you could pick up a Climatronic heaterbox, loom and control panel, and then use any bits off the MK3 airon that would fit.

Use the search first, Tony and myself have both posted a fair bit about what we've done so there should be a fair bit of info already on the forum. And we're not the only ones to have installed climate control. It's not as scary as it first seems though!

It seems that the passat climatronic is the easiest/best to fit.

Though, I am lost looking for the info, I can't figure out which system people are talking about

Is it this?

because if so, surely I will have to replace the heater box, all the motors etc. and that's not the system that's on the mk3.

Unless...

scaled.php?server=9&filename=p1010083sn.jpg&res=medium

These are the type that will work?

I'm lost even more now! Have you got a build thread I can have a ganders at?

I'm not sure there is a build thread as such, I seem to have written loads about it over the years since I did mine (2006) but it was probably all in various PMs. I'll try to get some photos and put something together in a thread, maybe others can contribute too.

In answer to your question about the controller, mine looks just like the dash in your photo, except of course that it's RHD, the original heater controls are replaced by an automatic controller.

It is a VR we're looking at isn't it?

Cheers

Well, I don't actually have one, but it would be a 16v because it meets my requirements for what I want to do to it.

The donor car is a mk3 golf gti 16v ABF.

Typically I've just found the thread for the conversion that was carried out from a mk4 system. Though, I've got a few things going on ATM and can't concentrate fully on it. The mk4 box etc all fits but you need different heater channels??

The mk4 cc control panel does look good in the rado dashboard.
