Mal77 0 Posted April 16, 2004 I have read different opinions, should my VR6 be warmed up from idel for 5-10 minutes and when it get to 60 degrees oil, then and only then be driven away, or should I start it up let the auto choke cut out and when its idling under 1000 rpm, drive away under 2000 rpm and let it reach 60 degress oil before putting foot down? so confused, whats the best for the engine? Eug 0 Posted April 16, 2004 I'd say the second method. If you let it idle for too long then hot oil will be splashed on cold parts when you eventually get going. I drive away almost immediately but keep the revs very low ie under 2000.
Mal77 0 Posted April 16, 2004 cheers mate, I was a bit dubious about letting the car run for too long, dont think the VR6 was meant to idle for that long period of time, I always make a habit of racing after it hits 80 deg on oil mfa, is that enuff or shold it be higher? Kevin Bacon 5 Posted April 16, 2004 Just drive it normally. When the oil registers on the MFA, it's warm enough for hard driving. Don't sit around idling for ages as that's when wear on the cams/followers is at it's greatest. It's not an ultra modern jap engine and neither is it prehistoric enough to require anal warm up procedures. Just drive it and enjoy it
Jim 2 Posted April 16, 2004 80 is a good temperature to wait before giving it stick :) As Kev says, just drive normally but keep the revs under 3000RPM.
Scott 0 Posted April 16, 2004 I start mine up and let it idle for 30 secs before driving it away.... keep revs under 3k rpm till oil temp says 80 +...... When coming to turn engine off - let it idle for 30 secs so cool engine oil circulates then switch off... I have to do this with my turbo diesel so do same with Corrado *:)
kongo127 0 Posted April 16, 2004 According to the owners manual you should not wait till the oil temperature comes up! Just drive smoothly till it reaches a normal temperature! :)
