smoking vr6

hi. i have a problem with my corrado vr6. whenever I drop down the gears, I get a puff of grey smoke from the exhaust. I have reacently repaced the valve stem oil seals, and also had a compresion test done, which came back fine. I am desperate to get this problem solved, so any surgestions would be greatfully recived. Cheers!

What grade oil are you using?

unipart, part synthetic. does that help? It's using about a litre every 500 miles!

Sounds like valve guides.... but burning that much oil with that mileage means could be a bit more than that - what are the plugs like ?

 

No.1 and No.6 show any signs of fouling?

 

Obviously oil consumption is down to how you drive a VR6.... I get around 2k miles per litre but hardly use the performance most of time....

 

Some VR6's burn alot, some dont use a drop.... is just the way it is :oops:

Yep. If it's very thin it'll burn and leak tons of the stuff and it mostly goes out the exhaust...

10w40 should be fine, however.

Cheers mate. Will check 1 and 6 for fouling. What could this be a sign of, should they be fouling? by the way, I have recently been told, the problem could be to-do with the little end, but if this were so wouldn't that be reflected in the compresion test? :roll:

If 1 and 6 are fouling then either you have badly worn valve guides or you are suffering from bore ovalisation or possibly knackered oil control rings.... either way it will need stripping down!
