Nope but it makes you realise how lucky you are,im very lucky to work at the place where im at now and have to hope i get took on long term as half the factory is on contracts half yearly at a time and have been for years now but its probably the highest paid engineering place in the northeast,if you dont have trade or even if its not a good one it seems most people are doomed these days :(

All of nissan is the same now everyone is on contracts even when your considered permanent so they can bin you at a moments notice if work drops or your no longer needed and the government want make it easier to sack people....wtf

fair do's,i know that can and does happen from my own recent painfull experience

of having to sell my house as my courier company couldn't compete with the

"larger" companies,so had to sell up to pay off debts etc and move into rented.

i know what you're sayin mate, but you have to admit there are far to many so

called "poor, poverty stricken" people who have never done a tap that think they're

owed a living in this wonderfull country of ours.

yeah there is plenty of spongers but what do you expect they took away all the jobs people like that are capable of doing like the pits etc, and they are 2nd generation benefit mongs as their parents are as thick as 2 short planks and could only ever do jobs like manual work so itll not change. The lower classes as usual are taking the hit for this recession and some people try to stay on the doll as long as possible now because their rent is covered and it works out better than working.

The benefit thing is sorted now though anyway my dad is ****ting himself that hell loose his and he is disabled but they are like nazi's with the assessments now so the main drain is from foreigners really and immigrants who dont work and cover here for the gravy train. The bottom line is thatcher and co ****ed the whole country when she shut the pits down and sold all our oil and gas, weve been in decline ever since

lol, true! well bar the thatcher bit imo,

thatcher was no angel mate,as we all know but deep down it was a combination of

labour and the union's causing strikes every five minutes and trying to hold the nation

to ransom that really bo77ocks'd up industries such as mining.

people got sick of hearing things like another strike scheduled for such n such a date,

the nation will come to a stand still, there'll be no electricity supply and so on mate,

then having to get the army in to do all the work that strikers weren't doin.

never mind paying twice or three times the

amount for home grown,as it could be gotten abroad for.

Have you ever did coal mining,my dad is a cripple from working from the pits from age 15, they were on strike for good reasons you know most of the time and manufacturing without unions now is horrible people are tret like **** and have to take it or they are bullied out the door.

I killed our economy all together, the riots up here were unbelievable aswell, people been beaten by soldiers in police uniforms, loosing everything it was mental she totally ruined britain, i think people down south dont realise this as up north we made just about everything and now out towns are dead except for call centres where having a brain is a crime. I hope the bitch dies of cancer

I lived on the estate where the two WPCs were shot for over twenty years, never any good news anymore :(

Back on topic.. strikes and bone idleness are killing this country along with the idea that all kids can go to university. Love it or hate it, we need people to mop floors etc.. and they should be willing to do that before claiming benefits.

no buddy, never bin down a pit,but i do remember the dockers and shipbuilders destroying their own industries tryin to

hold the country over a barrel.i'm not from darn sarf either,i'm from liverpool and know about

living near the breadline and rioting, myself and me dad served in the army for 5 and 20 years respectively

and let me tell you there is nothing more soul destroyin than having to be on call to do a firemans work

in an antiquated green goddess just because some turd from a union thought firemen weren't on enough

money(even though their basic wage was 3 times what i was paid as a soldier!) WTF!

think we should agree to disagree as they say,as it certainly wasn't a situation that was as

black and white as either of us think or would like to paint it.

I felt quite angry at this comment when I first read it having been a fireman for twenty nine and a half years. Didn't complete my thirty due to getting slightly blown up and retired on medical. I am still 25% disabled as a result of that, have a wonky ankle and some other problems from other "events". However, I know that at least 28 people are alive and well because of my, and my crews actions. That strike resulted in firemens wages being indexed to the 'upper quarter' of 'industrial workers' wages. Note that this is not tradesmen or management wages.

Then I thought about the ages of of members on here and decided that you were talking about the 2002-3 strike, not the 1977 one that I was involved in. I was not involved in that strike because I was retired by then, however by that time the wage agreement had been eroded, the dispute was not only about wages but went much deeper than that. If memory seves me the figure for the pay rise was 40%, however a Government think tank proposed a rise of 50%, well above any other proposals from other bodies. consulted. A major part of the dispute was about other things one of which was that less firemen were needed at night so they would close stations that might not be needed, reduce the number of full time firemen and replace them with part timers, etc, etc, etc. Google it, most of it's there. As for soldiers etc only recieving one third of a firemans pay I honestly have no idea. What was a soldiers pay, did they get housing at reduced rates for their families etc. As I say I don't know and cannot really comment on that.

After the 77 strike there was a common ground between the soldiers, airmen and sailors who were involved, firemen agreed that the didn't fancy doing the militarys job, and the military returned the compliment.

I'm just in from the pub and rant over. Awaits flak

hats off to you (and countless other)heroic hard working members of all of our services

for the work they do or have done wullie! it's the pen pushers that think"if we do this n that,we'll get our own way"

that annoy me,NOT people like yourself and other emergency working folk.

but at NO point in my life will i ever see going on strike as the way to do thing's,as in this day and age

moderate to well paid jobs/careers are hard to come by,and plenty of out of work people would be willing

to do the work that people on strike down tools and refuse to do.

my wage at the time was roughly £140 pw and shared one room with 3 other lads on camp.

oh,and if we'd have tried striking,we'd have gone to jail, simple as that!!!

don't get me wrong most soldiers love what they do,soldiering, but i certainly didn't join up

to tidy up after all and sundry because they thought they were a bit hard done to(or for

the pay rate either,lol).

The system has your pants down and is right in there, you basically wouldnt strike because jobs are so hard to come by,back before manufacturing died they were not so you could strike for valid reasons and our skill sets were higher ranked in the world, striking is a good way of teaching a company a lesson when the workforce is abused but the simple fact now is that the sense of community and togetherness pervious generations had has been replaced with selfishness and an arselicking to get promoted culture so we all loose out.

Alot of places that have been shut in recent years down to strikes were going to happen anyway, they wanted the places shut and just push the peopple until they snap just like pyrex in sunderland, kept cutting wages down and down and working them into the ground until they shut the place and moved it somewhere cheaper (ukraine or something)

exactly my good man, back then we were a big player in such markets, but like

you say with manufacturing going abroad for costing reason's we just arent anymore.

its a sad thing but we all have to realise it and progress somehow as we will never compete

with third world and upcoming economies overheads and wages.

great britain should have the great removed from its title because well,it just isnt

anymore. small fish, big pond syndrome unfortunately.
