Excuse my ignorance, but am I right in saying that the VR6 has a timing CHAIN, & not a timing belt???????

sure does, saves alot of space. Supposed to last for ever (i.e. 100K miles) . Chains tend to be ok usually, its the tensioners that you gotta watch out for!! If they wear out and go bye bye..... Boom!!! goes the vr.

Budget for about £300 to do the timing chains, if you do them yourself........Dealers will charge £900 fo the work.

Listen to the right hand end of the engine when you go look at it, if it's clattering the chains need doing. at 101K, they'll be ripe for changing. It's a gearbox off job.....great fun.

Now you know why there's so many VR6s around for sale with 100K on them!

:D :D :D

better off buying one that's done over 100k and has had a rebuild. Its even worth paying a little more for it too, as long as you know the rebuild was done right :? or by a reputable company.

Yeah I'd agree there, but most of us are still with the cars we lost our Corrado virginity too, so if only we could dump them and go back in time armed with the knowledge we have now!

Plus, as we're finding, the majority of VRs are now coming up to the big 100. Mine's booked into Stealth on May 17th for chains and tensioners etc and a warranty replacement clutch...... thanks to the latter I'll save a bit of wedge.

I'm glad I stripped the engine to have a look see on Saturday, because the engine makes no chain noise at all, and yet, as you can see in the picture ("oh dear", servicing) the tensioner is ready to pop any time now.

Well worth a couple of hours to check it. At least you'll know for definite then.
