LED clock in the Instrument cluster

Wonder if someone can answer a thought i've just had. The LED clock in my instrument panel has started losing

the little black 'bars' that make up the figures for the time display. If i was to change the entire panel and the

mileage on the new clocks is lower than my mileage at present, willl this represent a problem at MOT time as I

believe the mileage is now tracked with military precision.

 

If anyone can throw some light on this, it would be appreciated.

I'm guessing you can dismantle a spare cluster and remove the LCD panel itself. But if you did swap the whole cluster then I can't see the mileage being an MOT issue. You just need to declare the correct mileage to any future buyer of the car.

If you do go down the secondhand root then you might want to try and find one that has a little more miles on it than on yours now,

or you may have to get it adjusted to your correct mileage but by a perfessional, other wise the cluster L E D could flash if done by someone else.

I changed the LED clock for the same reason but it made no difference so I am going to change the whole cluster to see if that works. If it does \i will then change the mileometer to keep the mleage accurate.

I will update when I have a result

Well - still the same issue with the "new cluster" - so I've either been really unlucky and both the clusters are faulty or the problem lies else where. Anyone any ideas?

To answer your first question, I changed my cluster to go to a digital speedo from a cable. The cluster I put in had alot lower milage, I told the guy doing the MOT who said it wasnt a problem.

If they're fading, or the segments are broken up, or there's an obvious crack/leak/black splodge, then it's usually the panel so replacing the panel fixes it. If segments are just dropping off altogether (but sticking as either on or off) then it's more likely to be the LCD driver or a dodgy cable connection. Make sure everything's reseated well first.

 

Can't remember how many PCBs the whole cluster comprises, you may get lucky and find the driver's on a different board to the mileage memory. If not there's oodles of places who can reset the displayed mileage - putting it up or down to make it read correctly is totally legal, what's illegal is lowering it and then using the lower mileage to fraudulently sell it as a newer/less-used car. Probably less hassle in the long run.
