Replacing indicator light

Recommended Posts

My left indicator light is cracked and is full of brown muck which doesn't look brilliant. Additionally, that indicator has now stopped working intermitantly so I've finally been spurred into action.

But: How do I get the indicator out?

Also: How much does a new unit cost, roughly?

Curse Haynes and their laziness!

Cheers,

-Dave

Just replaced mine. £19 from GPC.

To remove them you need to place a flat sided screwdriver (or something similar) down the outer side of the indicator (furthest from the fog light) and the bumper and lever out. Only the bumper side will move outward as It is on a spring clip on that side and fits into clips on the fog light on the other side

Mine is a '91 pre-facelift though so it might be a little different to a later model.

£48 for a pre face lift (bought one of those too!) and about £55 for a post face lift.

The post face lift has a surround which the indicator actually fits in to. This brings it flush with the front of the bumper rather than set back like in the pre face lift. The indicators are the same in both pre and post face lift.

I agree - got new fogs for mine and they stand out a mile - thought about getting new indicators but thought they would be a fortune given they are larger than the fogs!

Phew, I was getting the impression I'd have to fork out for a whole bloomin unit!

I was thinking 'why would VW design an indicator like that!' :)

You think £19 is cheap for an indicator unit? Wait till you have it in your hand, and you feel how light plastic it is...

The £50+ for the fog light is simply normal VW markup + about 200% because they know you have no choice but to pay it!

fog lights are always expensive had to buy a pair for my old escort cossie... make vw prices look cheap! Even if the ford ones are the same in all cossies and xr2is RSTs etc...

You would think for the money that they would hav made them a lil more resistant to crackin... is it jus the position of them or the design as well that makes them more prone to crackin than headlights?!

Shit is that the time? Bed me thinks im waffling...

Spot on that man. I foolishly used my fogs last winter and the offside one cracked as a result :x Heat plus cold, icey air = cracked glass :(

Rest assured it's not a 'VW thing', my old MK2 and my BMWs also lunched fog light lenses like they were going out of fashion.

I was trying to do this tonight. I got as far getting the whole indicator unit out as far as the electric cables would let it but I had trouble getting the lens off. Any tips? Tried a screwdriver along the bottom where it looks like it is held on but the lens was going to crack before it came off I think. I've got am '89 plate C with the recessed bumper if it makes any difference.

EDIT: Ignore me, I'm being stupid.
