Steering shudders under braking.

Recommended Posts

Bought a 1994 VR6 a coupla weeks back & this is the first time I have owned a car over 6yrs old.

I love the car & Im not expecting it to be perfect but....

....at times when braking there is a lot of "shuddering" through the steering wheel.

A pal who has a J-plate Audi Coupe says this is fairly normal but when he saw how bad mine was he was shocked!

Is this a common problem????????????

Easily rectified?

Thanks in advance.

Well the common cause of this is warped brake discs.. might just be a case of replacing the front discs, but it'd be worth getting someone to check it out to make sure thats the cause before spending the money on getting it done.

this is not normal on a Corrado (or any car to be honest!)

Check the front wishbone bushes, trackrod ends and top mounts as well as disks and tracking... shuddering that bad needs sorting ASAP... :|

|Before spending cash on replacing the discs, take them off and give both them and the mounting surface a good clean. Apparently if this is not done when the discs are changed it can lead to them not sitting flush and straight and can lead to the symptoms you describe. Might well be a warped disc, but check this, and the other things people have mentioned first before spending.

On my golf, i threw new discs on in a hurry one day, and off i went, for the first while i was braking gently so I didnt notice the vibration, but once i got back to my normal self i found the brakes were awfully shuudery.

Turns out at a previous disc change the head had been drilled off of the grub screw, and it wasnt quite flush with the bell, and i had not lined the grub screw whole up properly, so the discs was sitting squint....20 minutes later.....all was well.

Could be discs, could also be the wheels. Have you got aftermarket alloys? Had some 17's on my VR when I bought it and the judder was terrible. Took it to a garage and they said they had the wrong spigot rings. Didn't like the wheels anyway, so changed them- no more judder.

Other than the exhaust, my C is standard (15" Speedlines). Had a quick check of the discs but they SEEM to be okay.

The shuddering does not happen all the time which is strange, but when it does, IT DOES!

Gonna get the mechanic at work to have a quick look over it this afternoon.

Thanks for the views.

My best guess would be that you have some very rusty calapiers, try taking thw the wheels off and disassembling them, if you let that go to long your going to cook your wheel bearing, to rebuild each side only takes about 40 mins, its worth it to check it out... also if you rotor is "glazed" ( blueish looking) that means that this is happening..... this jsut happened to my girlfriends Volvo 850 GLt and I jsut replaced them, and from what you describe tahts what i sounds like to me

After a full 30mins of looking the car over yesterday I discovered the cause of my shuddering............a broken front offside ball-joint!

Booked in to be replaced by a local VW specialist tomorrow for the great price of £40.

Ahhh, hopefully problem solved.

New ICE also ordered & en-route.

:D :D 8) 8) :D :D

A very happy me.
