benson 0 Posted May 20, 2004 Ok, bottle of Red-Ex coming my engine's way this evening! Unless any of you know of product which really does the trick? Will keep you posted. Might take a few treatments to make any noticeable difference. G.
dr_mat 0 Posted May 20, 2004 I doubt you'll notice the difference, no matter how much redex or STP treatments you put through. Most good petrols include most of these cleaning ingredients anyway, so engines don't get anything like as munged up as they used to. The only thing that'll really make a big difference is pulling the injectors off the car and doing the proper ultrasonic treatment, or replacing them altogether. benson 0 Posted May 20, 2004 I've been running on Optimax since last Summer too. Damn It! Kev - what's Vince's take on this stalling malarkey anyway? Is he a VR6 man? G.
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted May 20, 2004 Redex doesn't do anything to injectors! Not a bad upper cylinder lubricant though. I was thinking along the lines of something good and strong like Redline Injector cleaner or something like that. Off the shelf stuff from Halfords won't do much. You either need to squirt in something very intensive or take the injectors out and ultra-sonically clean them. Yep Vince is a VR man and he is no closer to coming to a conclusion than we are. He throws the odd idea into the melting pot from time to time. I'm sure if he spent long enough with a VR in the workshop he could suss it, but he hasn't got the time. It's not really worth paying someone a day's labout to cure an intermittant stall imo. Vince was telling me about various customers having their engines rebuilt to cure a persistent noise etc etc. It's just not worth being that fastidious with a 10 year old car. Sure give it your best shot, but the money is better spent elsewhere.... like schrick stuff for example
dr_mat 0 Posted May 20, 2004 Just reset the ECU every so often. Make the engine run rich and reliable... :)
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted May 20, 2004 Oh and if it's any consulation, the guys on the Golf VR6 forum go through exactly the same head scratching. It's just a VW thing just like it's a BMW thing to have the wipers stuck on permanently, regardless of switch position.
PhatVR6 0 Posted May 20, 2004 I threw a bottle of Wynns injector cleaner in mine. dunno if it made any difference though
Domi 0 Posted May 20, 2004 I am beginning to wonder if I should be shelling out for a new coil pack and fuel pump after reading all this!? Will my VR6 still be stalling I wonder? And I still don't have it back! Was supposed to be today, but when I called at five it was still in a million pieces at the garage apparently! I hope they know what they are doing :( Dr Mat, you never picked up the thread on where I took it in the end, know anything about Rye Mill in High Wycombe? And Benson, Will let you know how it is running when (if?) I get it back. Must say though, have been driving the MR2 for the last couple of days (haven't sold it yet) and while it doesn't quite have the grunt and excitement of the Corrado, it is a joy to drive! Such an effortless comfortable ride by comparison, but by the time I got home, was getting a little bored to be honest and really miss the Corrado! dr_mat 0 Posted May 20, 2004 Sorry, no, I've not spoken to Rye Mill, don't know them at all. I was just going to suggest you avoid Ridgeway like the plague, that's all. If I was asked to, I'd guess that they've fitted the parts, taken it for a quick test drive, and found that the problem still remains... So they're frantically trying to figure out what's *really* going on. Honestly, swapping the coil pack and the fuel pump (neither are cheap parts) shouldn't take more than 2 hours for one person at the absolute most. I mean, maybe they're just really busy, but if they didn't have time to do it, perhaps they should have suggested you take the car in a day later! Domi 0 Posted May 20, 2004 Great.. that's encouraging! Hadn't even considered that scenario! And, no I know, not cheap at all! Oh well, guess I will see how it runs when I get it back and if not good, wont be going back to them! Good to know bout Ridgeway though, I had considered going there, but chose Rye Mill cos closer. Where, if you don't mind me asking, do you take yours? Or are you one those gifted people who can work on their own cars? Darn, I knew finance was the wrong career path for me! I like cars, what was I thinking, should have become a mechanic (lol)!
dr_mat 0 Posted May 20, 2004 Ha, gifted? Me? No chance... :) Mine has work done on it by a number of different garages, depending on the type of job. I just had timing chains and a few other bits done by Stealth Racing in Warwickshire, regular servicing (and more VW-specific stuff) I've tended to get done at a VW specialist in Reading (though I'm not sure I'll be using them any more), and spanner-monkey stuff I've been getting done at small local places (also in reading). It's been a long haul! I can definitely recommend using independant specialists in preference to VW dealers tho - the dealers just aren't that skilled when it comes to older cars like this, and they're just not interested in working on them (in the majority of cases). There are exceptions, but most people on here agree the dealers are not the best. Still, the one thing you *can* say about using the dealers is the warranty on the work will be bullet-proof! If *anything* isn't right they'll do it again.
Domi 0 Posted May 20, 2004 Ah.. Well, like mentioned before, may still make the run to Stealth in the near future. Pity my bro-in-law has an aversion to Corrados, he is a mechanic with his own workshop in Maidenhead! He is strictly a japanese car man! Warned me off getting Corrado to no end (but did I listen? No, and he is not best pleased, but he doesn't have to drive it or even work on it for that matter, tho, sigh, would make life so much easier if he would!) Good news on the warranty side though! But I may be picking your brains for independent specialists if need be in future, what with you being in the same area as I :) Thanks for all the feedback! Cheers Domi, be good to find out how you get on - mine cut out again on a blast back from Pitch Hill (mountain biking) last night. Ragged the nuts off it the rest of the way home  like that helps! Maybe that's just what it's crying out for - doesn't like the agonising 7 miles in 40 minutes daily commute through log-jammed Weybridge and Byfleet!
