Kajeeba1 0 Posted May 22, 2004 Bought a 1995, VR6 with 73k on the clock last night - drove it from Manchester to Nottingham with no problems. Then once i got home turned the engine off then started it 5 minutes later, it would start but die straight away - this is still the case!!! Does anyone have a clue what it might be please - cant believe my bad luck!!!!! Thanks everyone Iain
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted May 22, 2004 Sorry to hear your new baby is giving you grief already. You're in good hands here and we'll get her up and running again  OK.... the VR is not the easiest of engines to diagnose. First off you will find investing in VAG-COM a real boon. It's invaluable. http://www.ross-tech.com for more info. It will scan your ECU and tell you what's up. I'm thinking you might have a crank sensor or fuel pump problem. Does your car still have the factory immobiliser? 1995 cars had a transponder in the key. They sometimes pack up. Another common one is the ignition switch going bad. It will be a process of elimination I'm afraid, so check the things we advise and report back to us. K
Kajeeba1 0 Posted May 22, 2004 Cheers Kev, I`m sure i will probably get better advise here than at VW. Will bear your advise in mind but think it is a job for VW. Cant believe i have really only had a one and a half hour drive before the first problem!!!!! Iain
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted May 22, 2004 No worries Iain. You will find the VR6 to be a grumpy little bast at times, but be patient, they are superb cars when all is well. VW don't like Corrados. The mechanics are intimidated by them for some reason. They just don't know what they're doing with them, so I would really urge you to *not* waste your money at VW. They charge £60 an hour for heaven's sake and they are absolutely clueless when it comes to Corrados. I note you're from Nottingham. C&R enterprises are near to you and they're not too bad. Just take anything they say about conrod bearings with a pinch of salt  Alternatively, Stealth Racing are about 90 minutes from you and I think I speak on behalf of the forum, they are without question the best place to take your VW. For starters they know the VR6 engine inside and out and they don't bullshit you. And their labour charges are half what VW charge. They are VW enthusiasts aswell and will ensure you leave a happy customer. Kev
dr_mat 0 Posted May 22, 2004 Since when did they only charge £60 an hour at VW? My local dealer charges £80 + VAT per hour...!!!! Would definitely second Kev's comments on dealers tho. Find a decent independant VW specialist, don't even think about using the dealers.
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted May 22, 2004 £80 an hour! Feck that. My dealer *was* £60 an hour last time I enquired, but then I check that as often as I do the price per litre at the Shell pumps, i.e. very rarely!
Kajeeba1 0 Posted May 22, 2004 Thanks Guys, Will probably try C&R then for these repairs and maybe Stealth for servicing. Any idea on the best fuel to use - when i bought it the nearest fuel station was ASDA but the 4-star nozzle wouldnt fit so just put unleaded in - this wouldnt make any difference in the short term would it? Cheers Iain
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted May 22, 2004 Don't put 4 star in your car. It's lead replacement crap your engine does not need. Use 95 unleaded or better still, Optimax. VRs run very nicely on Optimax and the engine was in fact designed to run on that octane, but the ECU can cope with 95 unleaded just fine, at the cost of a slight drop in performance. crazymarcel 0 Posted May 22, 2004 Might be somethin to do with the immoboliser and key, we had a mk3 gti with a duff key, car started then died instantly.
vr6storm 0 Posted May 22, 2004 easy one to check first too is the fuses and relays........mine had a "wee" starting problem early on this year and it was just down to a blown fuse and loose relay...............if you look under the fuse-box cover(driver-side under-dash shelf)if you spot really weird looking fuses then chances are they've never been changed
