kvwloon 0 Posted May 22, 2004 Have had a few PM's about the gearshift weight mod which the earlier C's didn't have fitted by VW, so thought I would post this up...with photos attached. OK, from my copy of ETKA, and my memory, you will need the shift weight, a longer attachment bolt which replaces the existing one, and should fit a new nut at the same time, as it's self-locking type. The weight is attached by the new longer bolt which is part of the existing shift mechanism but is extended for the weight to bolt to. The weight also has a kind of leg, which sits in a hole in the shift mechanism. It's pretty self explanatory really, but well worth asking your local friendly dealer to print you off a copy of the ETKA illustration. It is at Main Group 7, Sub Group 11, Illustration 122-00, Items 32, 53 and 54. The illustration will help. Dont beleive fitting the weight disturbs the shift adjustment at all. The only minor thing I had to do was slightly twist the power steering reservoir bracket to give more clearance of the pipes to the reservoir when the weight moved forward during gear changes. Easy. Obviously once you have fitted the weight I would just operate the gears (feel the improvement ) through all gears and make sure nothing is interefering in the engine bay. Dead easy mod., first thing I did to my C over 5 years ago, and much improved gear shifting, it's slicker! IHope the piccies explain a bit more. Part numbers are - Weight - 357 711 188 A Bolt - 357 711 234 A Nut - N 902 920
Jim 2 Posted May 22, 2004 Here is that diagram, just to help complete this handy little guide. I've marked the shifter weight with a red box...

KARMANN 0 Posted May 22, 2004 Thanks to Kvwloon i done this mod-U can really feel the differnece well worth the £30 it costs. That diagram and pic is identical to mine.I also had to bent the power steering reservoir slightly to get it in,i had to shave a slight edge off the engine bracket too in order for it to go into reverse. Thanks for your help Kvwloon Cheers Fraser
chris CORRADO 0 Posted May 22, 2004 hummm mine has that weight anyway??? does the standard corrado not have this weight or does the standard one have a smaller weight ?
kvwloon 0 Posted May 23, 2004 KARMANN, and steveo29, No probs, happy to help! :) chris CORRADO, As I understand it the 'early' C's didn't have the weight fitted at all. Not sure at what point they began to be fitted as standard, but I beleive after a certain point they were fitted as normal part of the car.
scruffydubbers 0 Posted May 23, 2004 The MK3 golf 16v and VR6 have an even bigger weight, had one on my old corrado, made it have a lush gearchange not sure on the price tho and it might be part of the mechanisam rather than being able to bolt on and off

kvwloon 0 Posted May 27, 2004 Yep, should feel considerably nicer now! Sounds like might be slightly out of adjustment as a side issue from the weight...glad you got the right bit in the end! 8)
