Cylinder head bolt snapped

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I need some help, I am doing my cylinder head gasket on my jetta 16v KR engine.

Basically I put the head on and was tightening the new head bolts and number 10 bolt snapped.

The stages I am doing is:

1. 30 lb/ft (40nm)

2. 44 lb/ft (60nm)

3. Quarter turn

4. Quarter turn

The head bolt sequence I going by is:

Exhaust: 10, 4, 2, 6, 8

Inlet: 7, 5, 1, 3. 9

I was on the first stage and number 10 bolt snapped?

Any ideas why this would happen?

Cheers

Bobby

We're they cheap after market bolts? Did you blow the bolt holes out ie remove coolant from the bolt holes as it can cause hydrostatic lock strip threads and possibly snap a bolt.

If the hole was clear and the threads were fine then it must be a duff bolt, what manufacturer were they from? I would only normally use either genuine or oem quality such as elring, reinz etc.

Unfortunately I cannot remember the name of the manufacture and through the packaging away.

These were bought from GSF though, and will be taking the bolt back tomorrow to demand a refund.

Here is a few pics of the bolt:

What instructions came with the bolts and did you follow them? Pre oiled or dry fit? Shearing at 40nm is **** poor
