Pulling 12v VR6 motor. Suggested Maintenance?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Pulling the VR6 out of our '97 mk3 jetta to do a clutch job.

What else should we be doing while the motor is out?

We just bought the car, history is unknown. Motor has 360k km (220K miles) on it.

Should we be doing a rebuild while we have it out?

Plan is to build a track car.

Thanks!

It's probably only got 12 valves ;-)

Has it had the chains done? Might as well while it's out.

Pulling mine next month. Plan on crank seal, (my reason for pulling it), New oil cooler and seals, crack pipe and seals, inspecting chains and tensioners (done 10k ago but worth checking regardless), I've done rocker and sump gaskets 3k ago so that should be ok, inspect core plugs, and anything else that looks a little dopey before painting it all up and chucking it back in.

Tis the season to pull engines out it seems! What's next? Everyone pulling out dashboards?

Funny you should mention that it's another job on my list to pull out existing dash and put in replacement oh that and pull out engine and a few other bit's and bob's.......

If it's anything like mine, the only thing left not touched on the entire car is the shell (needs bodyshop) and the steering group column (probably has play in the top knuckle!)
