Seat bolsters again...

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Been working hard getting my 16v ready for the spring and it's just about ready to go...

The only thing that's really winding me up is the saggy bolster on the drivers seat. I'd love to swap my cloth interior for a leather one but the budget won't stretch to that. I know people have looked in to possible solutions before but there still isn't anywhere to buy these as far as I know.

I emailed a firm who specialise in foam products to see if it's feasible to have replacement bolsters made from a sample one. this is the reply I got:

hiya these are cold cure foams / injected moulded foams I have tried in the past to sell one off foams

like these had patterns made at a cost of £1000-1500 each sold a few then was undercut by other people

with cheaper copies so have lost a lost I ended up chucking 90% of the seats and lumbers away, so

I will not do any more customers go with the cheapest person on the net even if its £0.50 cheaper they

would buy from them I have seen it they buy the cheaper version then call me to fix it, which I don't any more

if you want a run doing I can send you the info over it about 1000-1500+vat for the template then you have to

order 200 a time of the seat at around £20-40+vat per seat as

thanks

Just going on those rough figures, that would make the unit cost in the region of £35 +vat. Doesn't seem too bad to me if its a quality product.

...but the downside is, as Derek says, the minimum order would be 200. That would mean around £7000 +vat for the first batch.

I'm not sure whether the price quoted is for one side or a pair of bolsters. I'll email him back and check.

Just putting it out there to see what people think.

Worth having a look on VW Classic Parts - I was having a browse through the site the other day and they seemed to be selling a lot of seat trim / bolster sets - admittedly a tad pricey at 200 euro though! Might have what you need?

The upper bolsters are one piece, kind of an n shape going over the top. The lower bolsters are seperate. Might be worth trying to find a cheap set of seats locally, and using the passenger bolsters to replace your drivers one. The foam is the same for both seats, and the fabric on the lower bolsters clip out. Upper ones would require new cloth as to replace with a passenger one, you'd have a hole for the tilt handle on the inside mate. If you found a set at a reasonable price, you could sell on the plastic parts for a few quid, and it would work out probably less than the £35 for a new one, although a little more hassle.

Not 100% sure but I think that the bolsters on a MK3 Golf Gti are the same, so to repair a drivers seat on a Corrado you could dismantle a Golf passenger seat and use the bolsters. As said previously, the back rest can also be used, but not the cloth.

I don't think the mk3 ones are the same. The bolsters on the mk3 are not as high as the C ones and flare outward a bit more.

Like I said, not 100% certain but don't they flare out more because of the seat frame itself? Looking on Vagcat the part nos. seem to be the same apart from the prefix for Golf or Corrado? Also thought very late mk2 Golf gti seats had similar bolsters?

Hmmm maybe your right then............ Never heard anyone mention it before tbh. Bolsters just look different so assumed they were. Good alternative if true!

Nothing ventured nothing gained!! My Bolsters are spot on, but my brother has a pair of Corrado seats to fit into a polo, with the usual soft bolsters on drivers side. For the price of a passenger seat from a mk3 gti, I'm going to see whether it can be done - just need a seat now! Will let you know how I get on.
