boost pressure

I know theres a way to show the boost pressure on the multi function computer but I can't find out how. Can anyone enlighten me please?

Thanks, I just tried that and got a max reading of 1540, not good apparently, I guess it's time for a rebuild. :(

 

Do you have small pulley fitted???

 

With a 68 you would make up to 2000 at the red line. Your 1540 is .5 BAR which is a little over 7PSI, not that bad if you are running a std pulley.

 

If you are on a small pulley then I would look for boost leaks and stuff before pointing the finger at your charger. At least looking doesn't cost anything. Holes in boost tubes are not unknown.

get aproper gauge in so you can see where pressure flattens out. this may indicate a boost leak as it should boost more and more as you rev.

As far as I know I'm running on a standard pulley, but I was told that anything under 1600 indicated a problem.

If I'm running at 7psi now, what would I get

1. After a standard rebuild

2. After a stage 4 rebuild

3. With a smaller pulley and chip?

A std pulley will be made of steel for sure, aftermarket ones could be ally or steel.

 

Ball park figures, a std rebuild should give you a minimum off 8PSI. A stage 4 won't, in theory, get you anymore boost. A 68mm pulley should get you up to 1BAR/14+PSI..

 

There is a difference between boost pressure and volume of air moved.

 

There is not a true relation between boost pressure and power. I like to think of the boost pressure as a measure of resistance to airflow.

 

Porting the head or changing the cam will reduce the restriction in the inlet, this will also drop the pressure on your gauge. However, the engine will be more efficient and therefore make more power, with less (apparent) boost.

get a decent chip

 

Go SNS.

 

Who knows what goes into some of these chips on E-bay, if anything.

 

If you do get a cheapo chip then be sure to get a dyno wideband session booked too.

Checked out this cool little trick yesterday and got a max reading off 1800 when pushing hard in 4th gear. Nearly 100mph so couldnt push anymore. how do I convert this into PSI or BAR ??

 

Does it sound healthy enough for a 68mm pully ??

That reading is in millibars, knock a 1000 off for atmospheric and you get 800. Which is .8 BAR. .8 X 14.7 PSI is near enough 12 PSI.

My stage 4, self rebuild G60 used to do a bit over a BAR according to my gauge. You may get a bit more out of it by revving higher, try 3rd instead of 4th.

 

I doubt if you would improve that much by having a rebuild. Did you go right to the redline?

 

Thing is that's not what a G60 was meant for, IMO they were made for battering up and down motorways at a ton. Not sprinting 0-60. The peak figure is not as important as power coming in early on in the midrange.

It seems too be better for me in 4th and only saw just over 1600 (under 9 PSI) in 3rd and that was nearly red lining (which I tend not too do atall). Agreed that the G60 8v is more suited too low down grunt and there is good mid range boost there and pickup and its pretty pointless going near the redline as the boost tends too trail off and so does power.

 

So would you think 12PSI is okay for a stage 4 like mine ? Ill have to get off me arse and order a proper boost gauge anyway.

where do most people get their boost gauges from? Are there any recommended manufacturers? Price? Just found a supercharger specific gauge on demon-tweeks. I take it there is no real difference between this and other turbo gauges apart from the fact its say 'supercharger' instead of turbo?

 

And, finally how easy are these to fit and where does the pressure sensor go?
