Dan's first 'rrado. 2.0 16v Black

Recommended Posts

So, a few weeks ago my girlfriend spotted this black vw in a carport very well hidden.

Fast forward 4long weeks, and this is now the new pride and joy.

Sadly there's quite a bit to do on it, but hey, I wanted a project. And my amazing girlfriend found not only a project but one that stops me in my tracks every time.

A love I didn't really realise I had.

Wow, I love this thing.

Here's some pictures.

First few snaps.

Been on ramps today.

It took 5 people and lots of bits of wood, in the end 2 people grabbed each side and lifted the front on the four poster ramp.

Think she's a bit low...

The good news is she's absolutely mint underneath.

MOT Tech couldn't find anything to pick on.

So hopefully she'll be MOTd tomorrow.

I can now sleep at night again.

Fingers crossed.

P.s.: I had a massive grin as people gathered around it. Customers, employees and pretty much even people walking by had a quick look. Most didn't know what it was.

Yeah, not a car for shy people this one.

Love it.

L.e.: all this while phone kept going off, girlfriend cheering on: "GO RRADO GOOO!!!"

They are great for people asking about them. Had mine 8yrs now and still like looking at it. Every time I have a problem and thing about selling. I wash it and decide I have to keep it. Even though is a little tatty recently.

Mine looks like it had a rather lovely life before being locked away. Thank you for the nice comments. I'm really looking forward to having her on the road.

Thanks guys. Yeah, my girlfriend is a star!

Now, awaiting funds to pay for new oils, filters, engine mounts, cambelt water pump. And much more. Few quid short of £400...

Anyone preparing for Dubstock?

Car has come up well!

If there is no recent history of it being done then change the fuel filter as well.

Ian.

So, it begins...

Intake off, rocker cover coming off tomorrow, awaiting new gaskets, everything will be polished, painted and/or cleaned before it all goes back together with fresh oils, belts and filters.

Sorry about the small updates. Only get a few hours a day with a very very tight budget at the moment.

Waiting for parts now.

Anyone got any tips to polish the manifold and other aluminium bits?

i polished my (VR6) manifold which took a lot or effort and subsequent maintenance to keep it looking good. The new one has been rubbed down and painted and doesnt look too bad, so paint/powdercoat would be my suggestion.

High temp paint I'm guessing... Wish I had the time and patience to maintain polished bits on the engine but I think I'll bail and go all High Temp Satin Black on the engine bay ....

You will regret polishing , pain in the arse to keep on top of and time you will probably not get when the bext thing goes wrong and you end up with a scabby used to be shiney manifold with lots of little fiddly bits to try poke your fingers in , id say nail on the head with high temp paint mate and il will stay cleaner and look better in my opinion

Thanks redborbet, I thought that last night when fla mentioned it. Think I'll go with black paint for a longer lasting decent look. I don't have the patience to remove the manifold once a month for cleaning etc. no way!

Lovely looking example there! Nice little story starting to go with it too. Makes me want mine back on the road even more!

Thank you .

Sometimes the story makes the car .

This might look like a clapped out 90s boy racer car. But to me, it's the reason I'm selling my a4 diesel, and it's what keeps me up at night.

It's mine! And I love it!

Thanks for the positive comments guys.

Really makes me feel all fluffy inside. And proud, definitely proud.

Small progress again.

Stripping as much as possible ready for new parts.

Armed with degreaser, jet wash, wet & dry and VHT paint (and lots of coffee) last night I managed to get a lot done (in my eyes).

Planning on clean(ish) hands when I get under the bonnet in the future.

The aftermath

And the mock up. I like it.

Will go over with red paint on the inside of the engravings on the manifold.

Waiting for a steady hand day.

It'll get there. I ran out of degreaser (5cans!!!) but I'll get more for the weekend and keep at it.

Yeah a few people pointed at the scuttle panel. (Confused & clueless) is it special?
