Can any one please shed any light?

Recommended Posts

Guys, put key in key car to start up, heard a faint buzzing sound turned key, the engine was just turning over but not firing (i know its not the immobiliser as that lets the motor start briefly and then cuts off). Sound was there all the time. Turned ignition off and pulled key. Put back in and the engine started fine no problems. Hmmm

That makes a buzzing noise when you put the key in

Correct, but does the pump only buzz / whirring for a short time this is constantly on, (with engine not started btw)until you turn the ignition off.

Seriously though, we need establish your definition of 'buzzing'. I've heard relays clicking rapidly in the scenario you describe as spannerdmonkey said. That to me is a buzz. Things that 'hum' (quietly) when you turn the key are the fuel pump and aux water pump, but only the fuel pump would stop the car from starting if it was bad.

Quick update, today i have tracked the noise down to the fuel pump (on tank). When it hums it does not start? strange i thought its got to hum to pump fuel?

Unless its a relay in there going belly up, dunno will have to investigate further.

You won't hear the pump buzz if you are in the car unless it is old and noisy when it is running, sounds like you have a problem on the ecu/ignition side

Do you have a recent ignition switch and fuel pump relay? do you know if the starter/solenoid are good?
