Power Hungry

Recommended Posts

currently my corrado g60 is completely standard apart from a cat back miltek exhaust, I'm looking to take it off the road in the next month to spend a bit of time and money on the engine. Ideally I would like to up the bhp to around the 200 mark whilst keeping reliability to a max. So far my plan is to get the supercharger sent away to OCD for a service and either a stage 1 or 2 upgrade, smaller pulleys (either 70 or 68mm), rs outlet kit, oil cooler, twin k&n induction kit and de-cat.

Any body got any ideas what I can expect from these modification and if and if there's any other suggestions for mods that will get me to around the 200bhp mark.

Many thanks and much love :-)

Do you want 200bhp at the wheels or at the flywheel? 200 at the wheels is not easy, 200 at the flywheel is realtively doable. I wouldn't bother with a twin intake, absolutely no need for a moderately tuned G60 (and infact for reliability keep the boost return - I've tried with it on and with it on, and currently have it back on and will not take it off again). I run a standard (but drilled) airbox on mine and a standard paper filter, and am currently running slightly over 250bhp at the flywheel. To get 200 at the flywheel look at 68mm pulley, front mount intercooler, slightly bigger injectors, a cam upgrade and ideally a fast road head, and most importantly a chip to match your spec (not just an off the shelf one). That should be good for around 210 to 220 at the flywheel and be reliable. I can only echo the other comments about taking with JMR - he knows his G60's.

Yeah I checked out his web site and it looks pretty impressive so may give him a ring next week.

Why would you recommend keeping the boost return? I thought the hot air going back into the charger would do more harm than good?

Couple of things regarding the boost return. If you take it off you need an oil catch tank, as the oil breather from the rocker feeds back into it. You also need to lubricate your charger regularly, as you no longer have a small amount of oil vapour going through it. With it off there is an annoying whistle part throttle which sounds like you have a canarie trapped just beyond the firewall as the air just rushes out the bottom of the throttle body. You'd be better off getting a decent large front mount intercooler to keep the inlet charge cool (I have a golf G60 one, but people use other aftermarket ones as well). A moderately tuned G60 really does not need the extra air from twin intakes - the standard airbox and paper filter can flow a huge amount. I've run it with the boost return off, and the benefits did not out weight the issues for me. Where are you based - there are a few high power g60s around and it might be worth going to see one near you for some ideas.

The combination of modifications I had on my old G60 were, I think, the perfect blend of performance whilst not modifying the car too heavily and kept it reliable which I think is key on the G60.

Golf G60 front mount intercooler, SNS remap, 68mm pulley on the G-Lader and an uprated fuel pressure regulator. Those few mods and it consistently rolling roaded at 207BHP & 187ft/lb every time. If I was ever to get another G60, I'd have no hesitation in going the same route again.

I completely agree about the whistling, sounds more like I've got and annoying squeak under the bonnet and to be honest the dump of air doesn't sound all that great anyway so I think the return pipe will be going back on. I'm near ipswich in Suffolk so not sure if there are any local g60 owners about.

I'm impressed with those stats jim, those mods may be route I might take. I was up at edition 38 at the weekend and noticed a lot of people were using a front mount intercooler so it obviously a popular modification. What companies would you recommend for parts and supercharger servicing? I found there was a fair price difference between OCD's stage 2 service and Jabbas!????

These days I'd deal with OCD or JMR (John Mitchell Racing) for G60 specific stuff. Where are you based?
