Robbo149 0 Posted June 7, 2004 Hi all, just back from a week in sunny Spain. My VR was in for the full monty while I was away - recon head, timing chains, tensioners, clutch. I went to collect it this morning to be greeted by the dreaded "we've got a couple of problems..." It seems all the work it went in for went ok, apart from a spurious hole in the new head I got which had to be plugged (it was a Golf head so maybe there are minor differences after all?). The main problem is that now it's all back together, it's misfiring on 2 cylinders! traced the problem to 2 of the outputs on the coil pack (no spark). I'm pretty sure then, that the coilpack is goosed, is there anything else that could cause the coilpack not to spark on all six? That's the bad news, the good news is that the block was ok, only very minimal bore wear & no messed up piston crowns, :D (I've seen some nasty pics on here somewhere). A word of warning to any VR owners who haven't had their chains/tensioners done, both tensioner guide rails on mine disintegrated when they were removed  (It's done 101k btw) Cheers guys, Robbo
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted June 7, 2004 Did they drain the sump to remove all the broken bits of phenolic resin and chain rail? Interesting that as my chain rails were almost new looking at 93K, but the top tensioner was totally shredded. Coilpack does sound like it's had it. If you can get a Temic one for less than £200, go for that, otherwise it'll have to be a Beru one from GSF for £137 inclusive. You can now enjoy a smooth engine again without the chains/guides/tensioners cloud over your head  With new valves, you should notice a much stronger and smoother midrange pickup - when the pack of coils is sorted, obviously! Robbo149 0 Posted June 7, 2004 Hi Kev, my car's still in the garage waiting for a flush out & new oil (and now a new coil pack! I got a Beru one from ECP @ £138, it was the only one they had in stock). I'm really hoping I can tell a difference when I get it back, after spending the best part of a grand on it! When I went round this morning we fired it up to trace the missfiring problem & it did sound much much quieter, even with the bonnet up & only running on four cylinders! I may be getting confused with the tensioner terminology, I think I meant the tensioners, not the guide rails - the curved jobbie like a brake shoe? I keep referring to the hydraulic bolt thingy as the tensioner. Although I did have all the guide rails replaced as well, they were only a couple of quid each. I'll keep you posted. Cheers, Robbo
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted June 7, 2004 Yeah I'm confident she'll be back to her former glory once you've got all 6 sparks back. Strange how the coilpack decided to take time-out during the head operation. Such is the way with these fickle cars! Yep the hydraulic bolt is the actual tensioner, they rarely ever go wrong, but at £20 you may aswell stick another in. The bit you're referring to is the tensioning shoe, or pad which has the grey resin coating on it and it's that that spreads itself round the engine when it decides enough is enough. The black guide rails have also been known to split in half, or three, but again, that isn't common. I wasn't totally inspired by the replacement upper pad, so opted for the MK4 solid pad instead. Something VW should have used to begin with, but they, like us learn with hindsight I guess. K
Robbo149 0 Posted June 8, 2004 Just popped back up to the garage in my lunch break to check on my motor. She sounds so silky smooth with the new coil pack on! Definitely purring on all 6 now! can't wait to take her out for a blast tonight. Cheers, Robbo
