Hello from Windy Yorkshire! :)

Recommended Posts

Hi

Just bought my 1st ever Corrado,

1st ever VR6,

1st ever Classic VW period.

Picked up literally this Tues:

113BF906-FA84-4970-A4B1-8DB57A86AB21-1122-000001AB7E4F9EB9_zps76e6edab.jpg

Sadly

It broke down after driving 20mins away from buyer s house (in peak traffic) :(

Lots of newbie questions to ask!

Such as replace Timing Chain (now at 122k)?

Oil pressure bulb flashes at key position II (but not after starting up).

Will start a new thread later ...

Welcome to the forum. Don't see many VR6's in white - looks great :)

How did it break down?

Timing chains - well, if you want to give it a go yourself, there is a comprehensive wiki article written by a good friend of mine here. But it's pretty terrifying! http://wiki.the-corrado.net/vr6_clutch_and_timing_chains_replacement_part_1.html Alternatively in a garage it'll be expensive as you can see it's pretty involved - don't just go to any old garage, but try take it to a VW specialist, e.g. Stealth Racing. I think it'll be in the region of a thousand pounds unfortunately.

Oil pressure bulb flashing without the engine started and just on the ignition is normal. So don't worry about that :)

Welcome to the forum. I don't normally like white, but looks nice on the Corrado.

Local to me too judging by where the photographs were taken.

Cheers Jim! :)

I terrible at DIY so have to outsource then :( £££

Heard of Stealth - not sure if too far from West Yorks?

Have u heard of Awesome GTi in Manchester?

I also prefer to do the water pump + clutch at same time (as cheaper labour if done in one go?)

RAC man said i holding clutch too much in heavy traffic.

Basically once cooled down (when he arrived) there wasnt a problem!

He suggest fix the "sticking" Clutch Slave Cylinder?

Cheers MZPog :)

Am not quite sure about the Stretched Tyres on the alloys AND extra spacers on rear AND being lowered ...

Where about are u?

I'm also not a fan of stretched tyres but have a slight stretch on my current setup. Lowered mine is but I did raise it shortly after purchasing as it was slammed on its arse and no good for the roads round here.

Bingley by the way.

Welcome Wayne, looks a nice buy. Shame about the break down but sounds like it's not terminal! lol

If getting the timing chains done then definitely get the clutch done at the same time, no harm in water pump either. Do the chains need doing or are you just guessing they will from the mileage?

Mileage 122k

I searched online.

Most sites say there is nothing about servicing the chain.

Most people just change them at 100+

Some just wait til they hear a noise.

I am 2 minds either:

1. Change the whole lot including full service £2k?

2. Or just oil/filter and chain guides/pretensioner £100s?

From what I understand, it's possible to inspect the upper tensioner reasonably easily but I think there's a lower tensioner which, by the time you've took stuff off to look at it, you might as well get it all changed.

Tough call. Might be worth ringing your chosen specialist (be that Stealth, or Awesome GTI (who I believe are still pretty good but not really heard of them talked about in Corrado circles for a long time)) and just get their honest opinion. Stealth certainly wouldn't ever try to sell you something you didn't actually NEED doing and could advise you impartially. Could just get it down there for a service and let them have a listen to the engine running.

I guess a lot is if you've got to spend the money on it now? If the chains aren't rattling away and an immediate issue, I'd just live with the car a while, settle in to it and draw-up a list of all that needs doing.

Nice to see another 'do around yorkshire! I'll be moving westwards (from York proper) soon (probably around castleford area).

Not my cup of tea but looks to be looked after!

There appears to be quite a few of us around yorkshire - we'll have to arrange a meet at some point (once my G60 is on the road... ;))

Cheers everyone!

Seems a very friendly welcoming forum this :)

Did think about joining - VR6OC or CorradoClubUK.

But somehow came across this forum on google and decided to sign up.

Not sure how long keeping Corrado.

Was supposed to be a daily car for a couple of seasons.

But starting to enjoy it more and more :)

Its quiet in city, and that subtle roar in the high rev s:) :) :)

Getting quotes from following on oil/filter change 1st:

1 Chris Umpley £95 (Bradford)

2. Volks Works £90 (Leeds)

3. BM Care (Leeds) - not got back

Will certainly enquire with:

Stealth Racing

Awesome GTi

Maybe a 1/2 term trip to Stealth?....will see

To be fair a lot of folks on here are part of the Corrado Club of GB and on VR6OC so you'll end up coming across the same people wherever you go! :)

Chris Umplbey are good, use take my VR to him back in the day for servicing and general repairs. Don't think they will do any thing like the chains though. They are just to busy with everyday stuff.

And its true what Jim says, most of us are on all the forums you've mentioned and all are great forums with vast amount of knowledge available on tap.

I'm definitely up for a local meet soon as all the salt has gone from the roads.

Cheers Jim and Sanky

Rang Chris yesterday and he said I can book it in next week.

Rang him just now, and a lady said it will be a fortnight now :(

Just want to get the oil / filter + increase coil over height for now.

- hopefully fix the stalling + blue smoke?

Welcome from me down in South Yorkshire. Seen your other thread, get it all sorted and you have a good car. As for any meets we will have to arrange one. There are plenty of Rado owners in Yorkshire. Tried last year a couple of times but it seemed to never happened, people working, busy, cars off road etc. Hope it will be different this year, you never know
