As some of you know I work in a rail maintenance depot, our main work is maintaining First Great Westerns HST fleet but we do on occasion do other stuff. So last night I noticed one of our shunters was in the shed, these are 08 class shunters and were built in the 50's, we have 3 in total and even though they are over 60 years old they still do Stirling service. It was in for some engine work so i thought I'd take a few pics. These have an 6 cylinder diesel engine, each cylinder is about 15.5 litres, has a 12" stroke and a 10" diameter. 08 Class in the shed. Engine, some of the heads removed. Top of cylinders, these are 10" across and are 15.5 ltrs each. Top of head. Push rods and rockers. Underside of head showing valves Top of head. Valve springs Valves It was in to have a few cracked heads replaced, here it is in all its glory with yours truly...lol A few more pics for all you engine spotters. This is the engine and alternator for a Class 43 Power car (HST) Its a 64 ltr V16 with quad turbos 2250 BHP at 1500 rpm..... In the powercar (roof and exhaust removed) Rog.
