Big old engine (warning, may contain trains)

Recommended Posts

I know a few of you on here are interested in engineering so I tought I would share this here.

As some of you know I work in a rail maintenance depot, our main work is maintaining First Great Westerns HST fleet but we do on occasion do other stuff.

So last night I noticed one of our shunters was in the shed, these are 08 class shunters and were built in the 50's, we have 3 in total and even though they are over 60 years old they still do Stirling service.

It was in for some engine work so i thought I'd take a few pics.

These have an 6 cylinder diesel engine, each cylinder is about 15.5 litres, has a 12" stroke and a 10" diameter.

A bit boring I know but i thought some of you may like it.

I guess this explains why you're not shy with the spanners on your own car mate - car engines must seem like childs play compared to those beasts!

Great stuff.

Reminds me of my days working on Gardner lorry engines. (not quite as big though).
