Is it worth keeping my Corrado??

Just had my engine steam cleaned to see where it was leaking and VW have of course condemned my VR6. Head gasket is leaking coolant and rocker gasket is leaking oil and the auxiliary belt is freying. So is it worth me attempting to sort the problems out? Some advice would be useful

The aux belt is easy least. Even I managed to change mine.

 

The head gasket will be harder but I would probably give it a go if it were me.

Rocker gasket and aux belt cost around £15 each, and both are easy DIY jobs mate. HG can be done for reasonable money if you take it to a specialist rather than VW. Certainly not worthy of being scrapped. Even a replacement engine would probably cost less than you'd imagine if you are comfortable doing some/all of the work yourself. Plenty of guides on here and over the web if you can do it over a period of time by yourself, or even rope a mate in. :thumbleft:

I really don't mean to sound harsh mate but you are asking an open forum to answer something it doesn't have the information to answer.

 

There are plenty of guides and helpful people on here if you fancy giving it a go. If not someone will buy it at right price.

You're in Stratford upon Avon. Which isn't very far away from Stealth Racing who are well trusted VW specialists who know the Corrado and the VR6 inside out. As has been said, the aux belt alone is a piddle easy job (15 minutes max), the rocker gasket a bit more involved but no big deal. Head gasket is of course a bit more difficult but it might be worth getting a second opinion on it as a VW dealer themselves will have zero interest in helping you keep your old Corrado on the road.

 

It really depends on, as VAG-hag says, if you love the car enough to keep it and spend some money on sorting it out - or whether you'd just rather dump it and move on. Of course, we all vote that you fix it and keep running it :)

Thanks for the response guys! You may say that changing the aux belt is an easy fix but I really have no mechanical common sense what so ever!!! Over the past couple of months I have spent at least £2500 getting things fixed to no avail!! Even if I did get the gaskets replaced there is still the matter of fixing passenger door handle, boot lock replace roof lining, fix sun roof and electric mirrors as well as sort out rust issues. I absolutely love my car and have only ever owned corrados but I just think I'm throwing money at a lost cause. Maybe I will think differently tomorrow

A visit to stealth would probably do your car good Simon. Vw generally don't want to know with them now unfortunately.

In all seriousness, I'm sure there would be people local to you willing to lend a hand. Bear in mind the show season is just starting, so a few meets with like minded people could be good, who again I'm sure would be willing to give you a hand during the day/weekend or even give you some tips on how to do simple DIY jobs.

I will see what my local garage (vw specialist) has to say. They have worked in my car over the last year and have done a great job! I really don't want to give up on my VR6 as my valver has been sat on my dads drive for the last four years looking sorry for itself

id say if your already 2.5k in then its too far to turn back. sounds like you dont mind spending to get the VR back to how you want it & im sure you know the rewards

 

i am in a similar position with my valver. it was my 1st rado & i had always said i never should have sold it, well, i probably shouldnt have brought it back last year lol

it is currently in a boxing match with my mechanic, usual struggles to get the damn thing apart after so many years, & though it needs mainly new boots etc with the addition of a new steering rack & labour i must say im not looking forward to the bill

however i know that every time i even just see it i get that funny nice feeling of 'mmmm ive got my old rado back' & i can honestly say that even though i have my VR as a daily i really cant wait to drive the valver again

 

i guess in synopsis im saying no one can decide but yourself if it is worth it but i hope you sway in the keep direction :)

I think the other problem you've got is, no matter how much you've thrown into it so far, if there's any major / big problems with the car as it stands, people won't bite on a sale unless you virtually give it away. So I think at this point you need to fix it up to even sell it, at which point you might as well just keep it.

Seriously, read my thread.

U and I seem to be on the same page -

1. Love our cars to bits

2. Car goes wrong many times over

3. We try to fix or pay for

4. We know nothing or too scare to fix ourselves...

5. But never ending money pit ...

 

In the end, its really down to personal circumstances.

I still DETERMINED to keep and fix as long as circumstances, finance AND crucially a garage allows :lol:

I am passing your neck of the woods this Thursday (lunchtime),

Next Tuesday after lunch...

 

If u trust my DIY skills (I don't!),

We can have a go on the aux belt?

 

I bought belt from EuroCarParts.

Vag-Hag fitted for me as I watched:

1. Tighten pulleys with screw

2. Pull belt off underneath

3. Put belt on from under/above

4. Check

5. Remove screw from pulley

 

Er, u have a trolley jack/ axle stand?

 

 

Will save a few pennies as every bit counts!

Thanks for the offer Wayne but I'm at work both of those days!! Have booked the car into my local vw specialist so they can have a look, they said they didn't trust vw opinion lol!
