Headlining problems

Hi, my poorly corrado needs yet more attention in the headlining department. Im guilty of neglecting her of late, the list of jobs continues to grow but I haven't yet devoted the time to get on top of the situation. the latest problem and one that cant be ignored is the sagging headlining which is now so bad that its peeling away from the roof and onto the passenger seat!. Obviously this cant be ignored and ill have to pull my finger out and sort it, which im hopeing will spur me on to get the other niggles sorted.

Im currently away with work and my dad uses the corrado whilst im away (and while im home!). This problem has been there a while but just recently it got a lot worse. He was ringing around bodyshops asking if they would have a look but ive told him to hold his horses whilst I ask you helpful guys here if its a DIY job or best left to the professionals. Has anyone tackled this job with success? Is there a particular method to refitting it? I had used some adhesive spray on it a while back as it came away from the sunroof aperture. Studpidly my fingers were grubby with the glue etc whilst I was handling it and I got myself and it into a bit of a mess. Any advice on my best course of action appreciated.

If it's anything like a Mk2 GTi - nasty flaking foam backed stuff - it's a pain in the backside to fix without taking the whole headliner out, cleaning off the foam, then recovering it, this sort of thing. If you try to re-stick it with the headliner in situ, it just sags again. I guess it depends on how dedicated you're feeling, I wasn't and got mine sorted out by a car trim and upholstery specialist locally - Jim the Trim in Denton, Manchester if you're near the NW. Cost me around £200, so not cheap, but they did a brilliant job of it, far better than I'd have managed myself.

Bugger of a job as the material is so old now as soon as you look at it it comes away.. No easy way of gluing it back either as the material tends to shrink a bit and when you try and glue it back on the glue shows through.

It can be done but it's a pain, has yours got a sunroof or not?

If you do manage to locate a good spare were latex disposable gloves when installing it and be carefull of the two delicate locating tabs that locate the rear half, carefull of the brittle grey windscreen locating plastic trim strip aswell.

Recovered mine recently. Not done anything like that before and came out really well. Pics in my members gallery thread somewhere.

 

Got a kit from a place called AS trim. By mistake i ended up with enough black headlining to do about 4 corrado roofs.

Mine has a sunroof. So am I right in thinking the lining is attached to a detacheable panel? I thought it was just a piece of material stuck on but from what I gather the headling can be reattached to the panel out of the car then the panel refitted? That sounds easier than trying to put a new lining into the car in situ. I also thought it sat behind the rubber seals but obviously not. It looks like the whole lot is going to have to come out then to get done properly. Are there any companies selling replacement material? I notice that the orange coloured foam has just disintegrated, is this stuff stuck to the roof normally? What have people used to replace it?. Thanks.

Hi mate still looking for info. I'm hoping I can either source a the original material new which I doubt or find a trim company that can supply me with what I need. How have you tackled yours? Cheers.

I've sourced some material that I'm happy with but its a darker shade of grey than the original meaning the sunroof deal and sunvisors won't match. Can these be recoloured with anything?

There are plenty of fabric dye suppliers, but you'd have to send them a swatch and see if they can match it. Furniture Clinic do it for fabric as well as leather iirc.

Thanks, I've messaged the furniture clinic so hopefully they can sort me out. I seem to remember that also do a good kit for restoring leather interiors with a little spray gun. I might just do the whole lot.

Yeah I did mine with it, it's good stuff but I'd advise getting a couple of extra compressed air tins if using that gun. Gliptone do one too which others have used I believe.
