mic_VR 3 Posted October 8, 2015 Hi All, after some advice. Planning to get an old banger so I can get the 'rado off the road and do some work on him. But I'm struggling with insurance! I've been offered an old Volvo 850 for £500 but even TPFT I'm having difficulty getting insurance under £300.... which is frankly crazy IMO. Not helping that my NCB (14yrs) is being used on the Corrado so can't carry those over, but I was expecting something slightly more realistic. Anyone got any ideas or advice???? Jim Bowen 1 Posted October 8, 2015 I had this, bought a £150 escort and they wanted quite a wedge to insure it (the only excuse they gave was the amount of time i'd owned the car). Anyone got any ideas or advice???? they are just robbing bar stewards Mic I got a quote on a £600 lupo the other week, for similar reasons as you are thinking, on a new policy (as my VR is my main policy with the NCB & the valver is on a classic policy with limited mileage & started with zero NCB) & they wanted £340 compare this with the price I paid to insure the valver on a new policy last year.....car insured for £750 and a premium of £180 ish IIRC EDIT: the company I used for the valver is a sister company of Adrian flux who insure the VR & they gave me some discount due to the high NCB on the VR policy which raised the discussion with the gf about it would be better to keep the valver than buy a cheap run around - winner winner chicken dinner lol thus my advice Mic would be buy yourself another rado, 16v flavour ;) , & insure on a classic policy Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

mic_VR 3 Posted October 8, 2015 Don't think I can Dox. Mine is so modified a classic policy won't sit I think. I'm also part way through the year. STU175 0 Posted October 8, 2015 i had the same thing. what i done was change insurance to new car so you can benefit from no claims. i then got a seperate "off-the-road policy" ( cant remember what they called it now) to cover corrado which was dirt cheap and alot cheaper then insuring both Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Insured it separately in the end, when the insurance is up on the 'rado and I've got more time I'll sort the most efficient way of insuring both. Project 'Restore Mincy' can officially start! Jim 1 Posted October 8, 2015 Presumably not an R model? :) Been smoking around in my dads 2003 Volvo V70 D5 with the 5 cylinder turbo diesel engine for the last week or so. It's actually a pretty nice place to spend time and it really shifts if you put your foot in it, with that distinctive 5 cylinder noise (though somewhat muted by the normal diesel noises). We're doing up a house at the moment, so this is going to get used and abused. Doesn't the car need to be over 15yrs old and worth at least more than the insurance to be on a classic policy? mrginge 0 Posted October 8, 2015 Try 'A Plan Insurance' I bought (£200) a 1998 Ibiza 1.4 and people wanted £600-£800 for insurance and i was using my 9yrs NCB on the Corrado. I pay £400 on that. Did loads of googling to find a cheap 2nd car insurer and in the end i found them. Paid £220 iirc in the end. So all in: Purchase £200, Insurance £220, TAX £120 and it came with 12 months MOT so for a little over £500 fingers crossed i was good for 12 months motoring. Bought the car in February and so far spent £30 on a cracked thermo housing, pipe and sensors. I just want to get through winter without needing the Corrado.
