Cleaning aftermarket air filters?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I have a K&N or similar aftermarket air filter for the 2.0 16v. Can these be cleaned out?

Any thoughts on a secondhand value?

Cheers.

I'd give it a once over but tbh wouldn't go buying the cleaner or oil as it will leave you short selling it....

I've cleaned a panel filter with a hose pipe, just pinched the end of the pipe together with my fingers (no pressure needed) and back washed it (washed the crud out in the direction it came in), then dropped the filter onto old news paper to expel the last of the dead fly mulch.

The filter washes are just water based anyway aren't they? The Jetex filter came up as new and was sold via ebay

I would think that BMC would be the same as they are a mesh filter aren't they?

not sure - I think they are similar to a K&N but in a carbon canister to reduce the heat soak

The guide says saturate the filter with oil, not a good idea as excess oil will contaminate the MAF, a "light oiling" is usually recommended in the instructions?
