SteveM16v 0 Posted July 5, 2004 I've just had the head gasket dune on my 1.8 16V and have noticed that inside the exhaust has gone white?? Its still not running right - hesitating, ruff idle, gutless and thirsty. Is this white inner pipe telling me something??
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted July 5, 2004 White/grey exhaust deposits normally indicates an overly lean mixture. Check for air leaks etc, which will also sort the rough idle etc.
SteveM16v 0 Posted July 5, 2004 Thanks Kev - do you think that this problem could be down to a leak in one of the exhaust joints? I've just had the centre section replaced but this seems to have had little effect. It seems worse when its cold although when driving along you can see the rev counter dip around 500rpm but then quickly climb back again. It also sometimes takes off like its cleared a block but then goes gutless again. I had something similar with my old Sirocco (carb). It turned out to be the petrol hose into the tank was rusting and clogging the fuel filter. This can't be the same, as the C has a plastic sleeve??? Please help, this is costing hell of a lot of money to try and sort - I've had to book it into VW but I'm not convinced they will find the cause. Thanks for your help PS Anyone who lives in the High Wycombe/Maidenhead area who can sort this - I'd rather pay you instead of being ripped off by VW
