SteveM16v 0 Posted July 8, 2004 All this has turned out to now be (according to VW) down to the ECU. Apparently it requires a replacement as well as the throttle body needing doing (whatever that is). I have already spent £1500 just getting the car running properly and this work will be a further £1200 and may only be the start of it (again apparently) - What do I do??? New engine, new car, park the sodding thing in the Thames??? I'm so gutted and would appreciate any help Steve View previous topic :: View next topic Author Message SteveM16v :: CF Donator :: Joined: 17 Jun 2004 Posts: 13 Posted: Mon Jul 05, 2004 12:36 pm Post subject: white colour in the exhaust -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I've just had the head gasket dune on my 1.8 16V and have noticed that inside the exhaust has gone white?? Its still not running right - hesitating, ruff idle, gutless and thirsty. Is this white inner pipe telling me something?? Check for air leaks etc, which will also sort the rough idle etc. _________________ Schrick VGI, AmD throttle body, AmD remap, H&Rs, Koni TAs, Neuspeed ARBs, VT mounts, Poly rack and X-member bushes = The car the VR6 *should* have been. I've just had the centre section replaced but this seems to have had little effect. It seems worse when its cold although when driving along you can see the rev counter dip around 500rpm but then quickly climb back again. It also sometimes takes off like its cleared a block but then goes gutless again. I had something similar with my old Sirocco (carb). It turned out to be the petrol hose into the tank was rusting and clogging the fuel filter. This can't be the same, as the C has a plastic sleeve??? Please help, this is costing hell of a lot of money to try and sort - I've had to book it into VW but I'm not convinced they will find the cause. Thanks for your help PS Anyone who lives in the High Wycombe/Maidenhead area who can sort this - I'd rather pay you instead of being ripped off by VW Back to top
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted July 8, 2004 You can get 16V ECUs and throttles from scrappies for beer money. Don't give up just yet, try sourcing those parts from the breakers (must match the ECU part number like for like though) and see how you get on. If there's no improvement, park it in the Thames and buy a Daewoo, because the G60 and VR aren't any cheaper to fix I'm afraid. Trailering it up to Stealth would be a damn site cheaper than letting VW loose on it. Have they actually gone ahead and fitted the parts yet? If they haven't don't let them, it may not even be those at all. K
SteveM16v 0 Posted July 8, 2004 I haven't let them do the work. Would I be better buying an engine for £400 and getting that fitted??? What does this problem mean for me as far as driving it at present? I drive 60 miles a day at present - am I going to break down?? will it get slowly worse or die on the M25 tonight?? Kevin Bacon 5 Posted July 8, 2004 There's a good breaker in North London, on the bypass just as you come off the A12. Can't remember the name of it but I got a 35K 16V engine from them years ago, out of a K reg MK2 (yes you read that right) for £300. They basically just lifted the engine out of the car and sold the whole lot as one unit, complete with Alternator, starter, fuel lines, the lot..... so it *can* be done for little money if you put a bit of groundwork in. Or perhaps call Vince at Stealth and explain the symptoms to him as he's a bit of a whizz on the 16V. And then perhaps book it in? I was there when a standard 16V Corrado came in for some engine work. It sounded terrible when it came in, but left sounding almost new. They're the best  As for driving it, you should be OK so long as this momentary dip in the revs doesn't occur too often.
SteveM16v 0 Posted July 8, 2004 thanks Kev, have you got the number of Stealth?
