Rado16v 0 Posted July 12, 2004 Guys, a mate failed his MOT due to excessive play in the steering wheel. Not the column but the steering adjustment. Any pointers? Thanks Amit
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted July 12, 2004 If it's not worn track rod ends, the rack is fubar. The inner track rod balls wear making it look like the rack is worn and I've nearly had a argument with a mechanic about it because he was so blatantly wrong. He was adamant the worn ball joint on Supercharged's G60 was the rack. Felt like taking the offending rod off and clouting him over the head with it. PhatVR6 0 Posted July 12, 2004 as in the height adjustment? it'll be the little split collar pin that the toothed adjustment bit locks onto, they bend and wear away. knock it out and fit a new one. I'll take a pic of the column I have to show you what I mean.
Rado16v 0 Posted July 12, 2004 Thanks K and Phat. Speaking to mate it seems more of an height adjustment thing than a rack problem. Photo will be appreacited mate. Cheers Amit

Kevin Bacon 5 Posted July 12, 2004 Yeah if there is excessive vertical movement in the wheel, it will fail and will be as per Phat's advice above - or buy a new column for £547+VAT. If there is lateral play, i.e. you turn the steering wheel and there's a delay before the road wheels turn, it's the rack or inner BJs. K

Mine still has a butt load of slack around central, even with new top mounts (pre and post tree). Sounds like something else to go on the list after I get it fixed.
