Bizarre Oversteer

OK. Heres the equation

 

Front wheel drive Corrado

+ Roundabout or bend

+ Rain

+ Goin only slightly faster than i should be

= Massive Oversteer...

EH??

 

Whats going on there?

Does anyone else experience this, because I nearly papped meself the first time it happened.

 

Now though , I'm actually starting to enjoy it, and I've had some strange looks as people see a front wheel drive VW going VERY sideways around the million or so roundabouts where I live.

 

I recently Put some nice grippy FK451's on the front, so maybe its the the old rubber on the back losing grip first, but I dunno.

 

What i DO do know is it shouldn't be doing it, and sooner or later I'm gonna get it wrong, Oh so very wrong.

 

Any ideas before I bend my car? (It's just started raining !!!) :|

why is this mike...am interested coz im getting some new front ones

 

i mean why would this give u major oversteer could think if the rear ones were badly worn but if u changed these to the front would u not get major understeer :?

Corrado's have a passive rear wheel steering system from new... basically the whole rear axle is on a bit rubber bush which alllows it to flex and give you the nice rear wheel steering effect..... If these bushes are knackered, then you'll get too much rear wheel steering and get oversteer instead.... :|

Henny - if I'm out giving the car some stick, I presume that these bushes would get warm and you'd feel some movement from the rear in that way as well?

i'd check the tyres and suspension on the rear m8.

The tyres on the back ARE a bit ropey, but not so much that I'd suspect them of being the culprit.

I remember a bit of a reply to a similar problem thread ages ago, where someone stated a certain situation can cause the car to oversteer one way, and understeer the other way. (can't remember what it was though) and this is certainly the case with my car.

 

Corrado's have a passive rear wheel steering system from new... basically the whole rear axle is on a bit rubber bush which alllows it to flex and give you the nice rear wheel steering effect..... If these bushes are knackered, then you'll get too much rear wheel steering and get oversteer instead....

 

This rubber bush sounds like it's gonna be a lot cheaper to replace than both rear shocks.

I know how to check the springy guys, but how do I ask the rubber bloke if he's ok?

Oh, and Furki....

Tyre presures could be an issue.

I've got 16's on with 205 45 16 rubber round them. when I changed the 2 front ones the bloke asked me what pressure I wanted them at. I shrugged and said 'Errr.....' and he suggested 30psi, so this is what they were put to.

Thing is, I've got one of those sticky labels inside my glove box, which says "38 front - 32 rear" so when the oversteer started happening, i tried them at these pressures. No difference.

 

Any of you lot rolling on 16's ?

If so, I think you can guess my next question.. :wink:

With the size of the bush, I doubt you'd get 'em to warm up much.... the passive rear steering effect is actually pretty gradual as long as the bushes are in good condition... it's only when they're badly warn or nearly collapsed that you'll start getting weird handling from a Corrado... 8)

 

Personally, I'd say that this oversteer Louie Lungbubble mentioned is cos of crap tyres and bad tyre pressures...

 

I'm rolling on 205 45 16 Yokohama A539s and they're good... I've not pushed the car VERY hard yet as I'm still getting used to her and don't really want to bend her having just rebuilt her, but I've no complaints with the tyres at all... 8)

my 2 pence..

 

if you only have one pair of good tyres make sure they go on the back like the other guy said

 

i have 1 pair of eagle f1s and a pair of crap tyres, tried the f1s on the front for a bit and the oversteer was quite bad without pushing it, onto the back they went!

But when I give the car some welly around the TT course, it's as good as track-day driving.

 

And I'm only talking about a small amount of movement after a good 15+ minutes of driving...

I tend to run with 32 up front and about 26 in the rears... That's where my car feels at it's most stable and predictable to me... I found that having the pressures up where the sticker says made her too light and slightly unpredictable...

the corner is a hair pin dinkus, there was no apex, just getting around it was a neat enough trick! ;) :?

 

I've just checked my front bumper for any damage underneith on that corner... It HAS made contact on one of the laps... I'm now REALLY glad I bought a plastic bumper and not a fibreglass one as there would be nothing left of it if I had! :crazyeyes: :lol:

 

Think I'm gonna have to get a set of Titanium skids made by my mate to mount under the bumper! ;) :lol: 8)

If Id've done that corner that fast, the resulting photo would've been VERY different.

 

Youd've seen a terribly good looking, terribly anxious bloke grimacing behind the wheel of a soon to be wrapped up burgudy Corrado!
