Thoughts on this quote please?

Hello,

 

Just got back from the garage, whilst there asked them for a quote on some upcoming work. Personally I thought it was a bit high, mind you anything over 50 quid is too expensive at the moment... Anyways, quoted me just shy of 900 quid to:

 

replace rear axle bushes

wishbone arms

wishbone bushes all round

relevant ball joints

replace brake compensator (if needed)

fit susp kit

camber/track/balance

 

Mentioned something around 10 hours labour too @ 45 p/h if that's any help to price guide.

 

Comments, thoughts, suggestions, donations? :D

Oh yeah, everything but the shocks/springs/top mounts/bump stops etc... to do with the susp.

so they are charging you 450 quid for rear axle bushes, wishbone arms, wishbone bushes all round, relevant ball joints, replace brake compensator (if needed), camber/track/balance.

 

would have thought that was expensive, but tbh I am definately no mechanic

most of them are pretty easy to do except the rear bushes,only because ive never done them

Yep have to agree with the rest of the guys, I think it is a bit pricey, best is just shop around.

Cool cool, thought it was a bit steep. I think I'm going to have to get the work done in stages anyway, might get the rear bushes done at a garage and tackle the wishbones myself. Keeps the cost down, plus I get to get my hands dirty - which is always a good thing. Trouble I'm finding is sourcing a decent garage to get the difficult works done i.e jobs that require heavy duty machine tools etc..

I'd gladly tackle any job, provided I had the tools.

replace rear axle bushes - prob the hardest still havent done them on mine :(

replace brake compensator (if needed) - unless ur rears are locking up or not doing nothing at all which u would fell in the brake pedal no need

 

fit susp kit - well easy todo

 

camber/track/balance - go to a tyre specialist to do i got charged £25 this weekend to do the cambre and tracking on my dad's van

Thanks for that Alex, bit of a light at the end of the tunnel for me. Think I'm going to proceed with me plan, get the garage to do the rear axle bushes- then get stuck in meself! :D

Why don't you get a price off g-werks or JMR for these jobs?

 

They aren't all that far away for you seeing as you are down in Surrey? :)

why not buy youself a set of quality tools and do it yourself..im sure one of your mates would give you a hand..these cars are pretty easy to work on

I am sorely tempted, but my only window for work is the weekend. As it's my daily driver, I can't afford any cock ups. Bit of a bummer. The little things I don't mind, but the bigger things could end up causing me a major headache.

i work 4 on 4 off so i get 2 days in the week sometimes,when im not doing overtime,so far only one problem has stopped me and that was my rear calipers and a mate off another forum drove from manchester to bring me some new calipers

I turn to HERE when I manage to screw things up (which I have done on several occasions! :oops: ) but then, you look at the amount I've managed to succesfully do to my car and work out how much I've managed to save doing it (and how good it feels knowing that I built it myself) and it makes it all worth it..... 8)

hmm ..... know what you mean!

All well & good when things go according to plan - but that CV boot change a couple of weeks ago nearly scuppered me!

cut the old boot off but couldn't get the joint off the shaft. with the boot cut off & the hub in pieces I wasn't keen to drive it anywhere.

 

All on sat afternoon - everywhere was closed & no-one on the forum could help. So what do you do.... :cry: ..?

Having said that - it is the only way to learn & it is quite satisfying!

Well I just aint confident to start trying to take apart things on my car, when I have no idea what repercussions the work I am doing could have on it. I just feel that my Corrado is a bit too advanced to take to with a Lindsay Porter manual and start bashing away at it.

 

For those of you who are clever enough to do it, congratulations - but i'm just not brave enough to risk damaging my pride and joy!!

 

I'd rather pay that the extra cash to the chaps at Stealth to know that they have done a proper job, and I won't be overtaken by an alloy wheel at 80MPH or something equally entertaining.

Overtaken by an alloy wheel!! Been their done that, 80 mph on the m6 at j27! 8 miles from home, thing was it was the bearing that had collpased so it took the brake drum with it, so was left with not much braking and a hell of alot of sparks from the rear, somehow managed to get it to the hard shoulder and stop, got out to see what had happened, to be meeted with the sight of the hub glowing a lovely shade of cherry red! It only took three days of searching to find my wheel in the depths of the bushes along the hard shoulder, you wouldnt believe the amount of crap you find down there. But still I still do all my own car maintenance and have never lost a wheel since touch wood, youve got to learn from your mistakes, or you risk being taken oveer a barrel every time you go to a garage,which with a corrado is all too often.

It was my first ever VW, a bit of a knackered mk1 golf 1.3 cl in lovely mars red, but I loved it, I was driving a 1979 Series 111 Landrover before that, so the golf was like luxury compared to that. Why do you ask?
