Oil in air filter

Hi

 

Brother has a H reg 1.8 16v Corado.

 

He has noticed oil in the air filter. What could be the cause and will this create any major damage?

 

Also when parked the indicator light comes will stay on if the indicator switch left or right, is this a normal?

how much oil is there??there is an crankcase breather pipe that goes into the airbox,and do you mean when parked up with the ignition off and the indicator stalk up or down the side light comes on?if yes then its normal,its the parking light

There's a breather pipe on a 1.8 16V which comes from the front of the block and feeds into the airbox above the air filter... you will get small deposits of oil dropped onto your air filter over time... If it's a light amount of oil, don't worry about it... if it's REALLY heavy deposits of oil, check that this breather pipe isn't blocked...

 

Which indicator light stays on? Sounds like it may be a fault. When the indicators are left on with the ignition off, the sidelights on the side of the car you're indicating towards should be on as this is how you turn on the parking lights... 8)

As above replies, the indicator thing is normal 'parking lights'. The oil on the air filter again is normal unless it's very heavy contamination.

i think that it is a medium build up, not too much but more than just a little, will check the pipe not blocked.

 

whats the best way to clean it all out.

I would just replace the filter, check the pipe isn't blocked, and mop up any excess with a rag and not worry about it!

If the breather pipe is squishy, replace it. Old squishy hoses crimp under the suction of WOT acceleration, which sucks even more oil out of the breather box. Wrap some stainless mesh (a fine sieve is good for this) over the breather outlet and some of the oil vapours will condense on that and fall back into the engine, rather than getting in the airbox.

 

There should also be a copper mesh about half way down the pipe which VW put there, make sure it's still there.

 

If none of this helps, your engine is breathing too heavily and you should start saving for a full or partial rebuild. Depends on milage and condition.

 

The 16V breather is a real shit bit of design anyway. Right above the block webbing between cylinders 3 and 4, so some oil tends to get splashed up into the breather outlet by the crank.
