Stone0311 0 Posted April 29, 2021 Appreciate this isnt C related, but thought there may be a pool of knowledge on here. Ive had a Mk1 Golf in storage for a few years (next project after the G60 is finished) and have been keeping my eyes open for a 1.8T for transplant. Yesterday offered a BAM225 lump from a TT quattro, 150k on the clock and now siezed having been stood; so rebuild required. Its priced to sell with everything except the loom from the engine bay - £200 Seems like a good deal but the mileage was the only thing on my mind - My Q is does the mileage matter if being rebuilt? Any thoughts appreciated, its not an engine i know. Thx
Dox 23 Posted April 29, 2021 I’m about to break a BAM tt with 103k miles on it, engine can be heard running. It’s been sorned for 18 months -COVID, it does use 1L of oil every 1k miles - most multi valves do at 18 years old
_Matt_ 32 Posted April 29, 2021 Mileage shouldn't be problem if you're rebuilding it and replacing worn out parts. The only issue i can think of is the block being worn but i would have thought that's mostly fixable with overboring and piston rings to suit or sourcing a new block if it came to it once it is apart. That said you should be able to find an engine that is not seized - that's not a good start - Dox's engine sounds a good option as an alternative and if you're re-building the oil consumption wouldn't be too much of a problem. It depends on what is causing the oil consumption too - could just be a head refurb jobby on Dox's engine as would have thought the bottom end would still have plenty of life in it at 100k. Dox 23 Posted April 29, 2021 They have 5 valves per cylinder and the seals will be hard and cracked, it doesn’t smoke and pulls well.
Stone0311 0 Posted April 30, 2021 (edited) Thanks, for £200 i'll get it and have a look - comes with all the running gear, brakes, subframe etc so could probably break it and cover the inital cost. @Dox May come back to you if the outcome isnt good 👍 Edited April 30, 2021 by Stone0311
