Vr6 won’t idle

Recommended Posts

Hi guys I’m wondering if you are able to help me with this ongoing issue with my vr6

AAA obd1

it ran perfectly fine for a while and I took it out one night and it just started bogging down and wouldn’t hold idle, so I got it home real quick before it broke down and looked at it the next day.

now it will no longer idle at all unless I hold the throttle down but even then I can feel it misfiring

i had to change my clutch at some point anyway so I thought this is a good time to do my timing and pull the engine while I do it.

so I go and change my clutch and check my timing and behold it has already been done!!! There is no slack in the chain and it all lines up

anyway I put the engine in and before getting it plugged in, I decide to clean all the big block connector terminals because I’m grasping at straws on why it doesn’t run

then I change out my temp sensor and the other yellow one

long story short it still will not idle unless I hold the throttle down

That’s a video of it attempting to run^^

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated

I’ve slowly been changing everything on this car because everything seems to be breaking on me within a month of getting it running again

so far over the span of 2 years I have done

new coil pack

new idle control valve

new pvc filter thing

new crank sensor

new hall sensor

new fuel pump

changed ecu (apparently electrics don’t like having water on them😭😭)

new coolant sensors

new iat sensor

new tps sensor

refurbished injectors

new MAF!!!! (Old ones metal mesh thing was ripped up and I didn’t wanna risk a metal bit going into my engine)

new ht leads and spark plugs (done that like 2 months ago)

new fuel filter (literally 3 hours ago)

I knew having a 30 year old car will give me issues but come on this is ridiculous I think I’ve got a lemon😭😭

Oh and just before posting I thought i better add this

The day after I put the different ecu on the car I took it out for a spin and it just SHUT OFF on me and started leaking petrol everywhere

i had a leaky injector that overfilled so much it came out of my air box I was just lucky it didn’t catch fire I reckon

anyway the fuel tank did run DRY so I’m wondering if my new fuel pump is now slightly nackered??!

and yes I did change all the spark plugs and oil and oil filter afterwards

Sounds like you have a vacuum leak - you can measure your manifold pressure off one of the vac hoses using a t-piece for a pressure gauge or by connecting to one of the little test outlets.

Also, have you checked your accelerator cable to make sure it's secure and not slipping or stretched?

OBD1 cars run like a bag of shite if the battery has been disconnected / gone flat, it takes several drive cycles to settle down as the eco needs to relearn the perimeters of the sensors.

Randomly disconnecting sensors puts the eco into limp exaggerating your stall issues.

Battery off over night, drive for several days without tinkering, then review the issues you have

The lambda probe when faulty causes exactly the problem you have. Removing the TPS plug puts the ECU into limp mode and the ECU disregards what the lambda probe says.  To confirm you need to obtain the obd error messages.
