HT Spark - Returns

If you stand behind the wing and look at the colpack, my top left connection is sparking.

When I follow this lead, it sparks again at the plug.

 

What should I do? Change just that lead? Which number is it please?

 

(I know it sounds obvious, but I thought I'd check anyway)

 

This happened last year about this time too, but went away again.

Can it spark at BOTH ends and still be as likely to be the coilpack as the lead?

 

How much is a new colipack?

How much for a new set of leads?

Coilpack is £115+VAT from GSF and £hugeamount from VW.

Leads can be purchased individually from either VW or Ford (believe it or not - cheaper at Ford). Or you can buy a set from the usual suspects.

I already know that the Coilpack is £188.00+VAT from VW.

 

Mind you, they do give me 10% for being a member of CCGB

 

Still a rip off I know.

 

How much for a FULL set of leads? I assume thay are individually priced, and as my suspect one is short, it should be cheap. Do I need any tools to change it?

A set of leads from G&S is £59, not sure how much the vw ones are, u might just wanna try the one thats causeing probs first.

 

Only the plug puller lead, which you should have under the bonnet.

I ordered the Genuine HT leads from VW, at a cost of £108.

They offered me a set for £65, but the were "altenative" replacements.

 

Where do I find the "puller lead" please?

Usually they attached to the bonnet holder, well mine is.

 

vw sell them if not.

Mine was in the boot, with the rest of the tool kit. Presumably it came unclipped from the bonnet stay once and they didn't wanna lose it.

Lead #6 was guilty. I changed that one, tried the car and the problem was gone.

 

Gonna change all the other leads too now to be sure of a good quality set fitted.

Think i may have the same problem you described, I noticed the engine was missfiring slightly on idle when hot, popped the bonnet and could hear a definite TICK each time it was cutting out...looked all over the shop to find the source of said noise and noticed that a spark was exiting through the side of the HT lead on cylinder 5 (through the black rubber part just before the metal plug holder) and grounding on what looks like the exhaust manifold heat shield...i.e. the closest peice of metal to the plug. Will just replacing the lead cure the problem? Can you buy them individually from the likes of GSF?

All I can say is that replacing the lead cured my problem.

 

You can buy them individually from VW (Red Beru leads), but VW also sell a Quantum? (I think this is waht they were called) brand which are the ones I just had to replace after just 2 yrs. (I replaced them with Red Beru ones).

 

Quantum? were £65inc. for a COMPLETE set, and you could probably try and get 10% off that.

 

Single Beru lead will cost around £20 depending on length.

 

I wouldn't recommend changing just 1 lead.

 

If you want to pay postage, I will give you the one I just took off my car for nothing. About £2 I reckon.
