LDZ2555 0 Posted September 1, 2004 Since i last spoke to you i have rebled the coolant on my VR and used water wetter which did make a bit better but it is still to hot. I today took it to a VW specialist to rebleed it for my own piece of mind and it came back the same. The top rad hose is very hot while the bottom one is cold is this normal? My aux water pump is not working i have found out  could this be the cause of the problem or will this only come on when parked? Also the breather pipe i think it is that comes out of the left side of the engine near the inlet manifold and gos into the black pipe (about 6 inches long) which your air filter mounts on to with a electrical connection in between. Mine has a thin coating of oil inside the pipe. What is this? Is this normal? Any help is much appreciated thanks.
corradovr6sc 0 Posted September 1, 2004 have you changed the thermostat? does the fan work ok? the oil is from the crankcase, this is normal, although not very satisfactory.

Supercharged 2 Posted September 1, 2004 Sounds like a blocked radiator...
LDZ2555 0 Posted September 1, 2004 its a new radiator about 4 weeks old. it is certanily worth checking though i will take off the hoses and run a hosepipe through it hopefully that should see if there is any blockages or crap in it.
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted September 1, 2004 If the bottom hose is cold, you either have a jammed thermostat or a major air lock. I managed to get a thermostat from VW which was buggered from new, so it can happen on rare occasions.....
LDZ2555 0 Posted September 1, 2004 where is it located and can you tell by looking at it. thanks
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted September 1, 2004 Behind the radiator fan there is a plastic cover on the block. Lift that off and you'll see 3 temperature senders in a line mounted in a large plastic housing, it's inside there. Or if easier, follow the top and bottom rad hoses and where they meet is the thermostat housing. To get it off you have to remove the coilpack and then you'll see what needs doing. It's not too bad a job. Get a couple of bottles of G12 Plus ready as you'll need it, and a new stat. You can't tell by looking at it. Only way to test the stat is to remove it and dunk it in boiling water to see if it opens or not.
Robbo149 0 Posted September 2, 2004 Did my thermostat recently & as Kev says it's not too bad a job, (I'm a bit of a diy novice btw). You'll need to remove the whole thermostat housing from the engine before you can take it apart to get at the thermostat. There are 3 hex bolts (2 long & 1 short) IIRC, which hold the whole thing on. It's also a good idea to replace all the seals too as the stat housing is a common source of leaks on the VR. HTH, Robbo
