Where to get my G60 looked at?!

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Have had my G60 for about six weeks now and am generally happy with it. There are a few things that niggle me though, a rattling noise when I'm accelarating the most recent...

My car was chipped and pullied and inductioned by Jabbasport in 1991 (I have receipt) but I don't know what sort of chip/pulley or any other details! The charger was rebuilt to stage 4 spec too. As these mods were done three years ago I feel I need to get the whole car inspected and worked on where required. Not to mention that all of the VW speciailists around here know sod all about Corrado's, particularly superchargers...

I would also like to have a boost return mod done. Are there any other mods that would be worth looking into?

I have heard great things about G-Werks and also Stealth Racing (who are incredibly booked up at present). Where would be the best place to take it? I have no qualms about driving a long distance as peace of mind is my goal!!

Thanks.

The rattle under accell...

2 things.. firstly have you tried a high quality fuel such as Optimax or BP Ultimate? The rattle *could* be pinking and if it vanishes after trying a tank full of that then you know what it is.

If that doesn't cure it then I suspect you may have the exact same problem as me which is damage to the exhaust downpipe or the gaskets that connect it to the manifold or the cat - apparently the only cure for this is new downpipe, new bolts allround and new gaskets. I'm looking into getting it done - sourcing the parts isn't a problem, but the labour to do it is a good 3 hours or so as its such a pig of a job.

The symptoms of the rattle are - can't really hear it on half throttle driving along, can't hear it at all if the car is stationary and you rev the engine, and the rattle seems to vanish once the revs go above 3,500RPM'ish. But under acceleration the noise is awful and you get a noticable rattle when the car is at idle too...

G-Werks are top chaps to take your motor to and they are about a 140 mile drive from the West Midlands.. aiming to get down there myself in the not too distant future for a charger rebuild! JMR (16vG60) on these forums also has an excellent reputation and is not based too far from G-Werks - John is definately worth talking to if you need any advice.

If you can handle the wait, Stealth Racing really are second to none.

I have used Optimax from day one of buying the car so I probably have same problem as you, Jim. The rattling is definitely coming from underneath the car....

Stealth were booked up for about two months last time I called them so I think G-Werks is probably the way for me...

You *could* try AmD who are based down in Bicester near Oxford - also have an excellent reputation as VAG specialists. Not the place to go for a charger rebuild but are great for just about everything else! :)

Rattle sounds the same as well - right from around the middle of the front axle kinda area.

Stealth and AMD don't do much G60 work but have enough experience of them to provide a top notch service, especially Stealth. I can't commend Vince and Graham enough. G60 work is a very niche market at the moment and it's a very specialist bit of kit. I would personally go to a dedicated G60 specialist such as G-Werks, Pit Stop Developments or John Mitchell (16V G60).

Anything that increases the power is good in my eyes, heh heh! I bought the car as a project so am up for any kind of mods (engine mods rather than ridiculous body mods)! I just want to get my G60 looked at by somebody who knows their stuff! The boost return mod interests me greatly too (as I have said before). What other mods would be worth going for?

I have just gotta weigh up my finances now but plan to get something done in the next month or so.

Gas flowed manifold to mate up with the new exhaust down pipe.....Milltek exhaust.....the list of modes for the charger area is almost endless, ranging from normal rebuild through to stage-'n', extra oil cooling, rerouted intercooler, smaller pulley + remap and more..... give John Mitchell a ring a have a chat.

John.
