What's wrong with your other VR6? :) BTW - gearboxes do go sometimes, it doesn't *necessarily* mean the car has been thrashed. A mate had to have a new box in a BMW 318i at 18 months of age, cos it kept dropping out of 3rd gear.

Yeah - the sensor itself is just a solid state coil. It's not likely to "wear out" as such, it's more likely the connections.
-
The "Engine Speed Sensor" is listed at £140, not something you wanna replace "just in case"!!
-
I'm guessing it'll throw a crank pos sensor fault if the engine isn't turning anyway, so that's not likely to be the cause. Is your ISV working properly? What about testing the operation of the lambda?
-
Gotcha. Ta! :)
-
Ok. I wonder why VW didn't do it that way in the first place then? They must have had a reason..
-
What's the difference with an X-flow head then?
-
It's pretty normal for them to have to use blow torches to heat and therefore release the track rod ends. AFAIK there's no real need to replace them as a result. It makes the seal nice and tight when you've heated the track rod end and loaded up the nut, then allow it to cool. Of course, you could have an extreme case, but I'd say whack the blow torch on it and see if they can't loosen it up. Should be fine.

Don't they run rich on cold start *anyway*? And aren't they ignoring the lambda anyway during the cold start sequence? Or is that just the VRs? Ignore me and delete my post if I'm heinously wrong.. ;)

So it's beginning to look like we need a group buy on adjustable steering columns? Fab.

It's because this ten year old VW is STILL featuring in stuff like "Jeremy Clarkson's Hot 100": http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASI ... 90-1370047 It's a very short piece on the VR6 (mostly slagging off the late 'Rocco), but it's THERE. "Synopsis A look at Jeremy Clarkson's idea of the 100 fastest, coolest, biggest, smallest, and strangest cars of the last four decades. Clarkson also includes his top ten "fluff magnets" from the XR3I to the Mercedes 500SL, and his top ten motor movies."

BTW- Personally I just think I don't wanna know what's going on in there. I'll live on in blissfull ignorance, thanks... (Until the day I have to keep topping up the oil, or I find the performance is significantly hindered...) When's the Shrek coming then, Kev? Any news?

The knock sensors are monitored, but they're only small microphones, so the ECU can't fault them unless they go open or short circuit. I suppose it's possible they are simply not picking up the knocking. It may be worth removing them and inspecting one to see if it looks ok.
-
ok.. hence my other questions to kev. :)
-
It's a VR6, no ignition timing adjustment possible... Maybe need a new knock sensor? What's VAG-COM showing for your per-cylinder timing advance values, Kev? Odd that it would be all six plugs, unless both knock sensors just aren't working.

You been putting high sulphur fuel in??
-
Diesels will burn ground up bits of digestive biscuit without too much difficulty, adambrill, so unleaded would probably be fine... :)

Got something to say Matt? *keeping quiet*

I think the central locking has to be setup right. I can't recall the details, but it's something like it has to be put into a given state, then reset, cos otherwise it'll think it's starting from the wrong state, or something? Clear as mud. :) I've got no details, maybe Bentley will have some clues? It's something like: if there's three "states" A, B and C. (A is fully unlocked for example.) The system must be hooked up in one of these known states, otherwise when it tries to trigger movement, strange things happen and it gets confused.
-
Where did you see me repeating myself? I said something completely different from my previous comments... ;)

In fairness to the folks that don't see this site all day long like those of us with no life, the search thing isn't the best in the world on these php BB systems, so it's very tricky to find the things you're looking for, but it was only two or three days ago (I'm sure) when the last "oil use in my VR6" thread went through. A head rebuild at Star is the outcome I think...
-
No-one has asked what type of oil is being used here! Surely we should have got that question in before the fourth or fifth reply on the weekly "how much oil does your VR6 use" thread?
-
The oil fairy drinks it. It makes her drunk. Then she pukes on your bonnet as she's leaving. I bet you thought that was bird crap, didn't you?

This is a "new" alternator, right? It's under warranty? Take it back. Easier than faffing about with the dashboard.. If the next one is the same, you have a problem elsewhere..
