  1. This is a bit muppety but hopefully you can help. Probably obvious to everyone but me, so please don't lol.

Went to fit a brand new BMC CDA to a mate's VR today, assuming the CDA engine end flange would slot over the MAF flange. Duh, wrong!! Seems I need a short length of silicone or similar tube. What size tube? The CDA flange is external 85mm and the MAF flange is 80mm. So do I get a piece of 80mm so it fits tight on the MAF end and sqeeeeeze it over the CDA 85mm flange or go the other way and use 85mm tube and hope the jubilee clip will close it up enough to make a seal on the 80mm MAF flange?

I fitted a used one that I bought recently (from this forum, thanks Rams) to my Golf3 VR6 the other day and that came with a short piece of silicone tube already on it, so it wasn't an issue.

Where is best place to buy the tube? BMC do a red silicone one in either 80mm or 85mm internal diameter and 80mm long but it is pretty expensive at £22.20 inc VAT.

  2. Found this article on a US site called 'Corrado World' http://www.corradoworld.com/article/fogs.html

Explains how to replace just the lense. Anyone done this? I'd really like to know if you can buy just the lense from someone here in the UK (or Europe for that matter).

Given they are ALWAYS cracking (according to the guy in the article it is because they get too hot, not because of stone hits) and cost about £110.00 from a VW dealer, this would be a useful fix. I have found a site called 123spareparts who have 'genuine Hella fog' for about £85.00, but looks like it is for the earlier cars only.

  3. Yes, genuine VW items, part no 1LO 863 447, and they are for Polo or Ibiza 1993-1998, and available from VW main dealers for the bargain price each of £0.67 plus VAT, so for a pair inc VAT only £1.60 (and no P&P). So they are a fair bit less money than from Veedubmachine. Appreciate Les has to make a living!!

  4. Cool Ian (GlosterOx) and thanks, they are exactly the ones I'm looking at....so you have them and they are OK, yes??

I'll go for them. This is an obscure VW parts vendor that I only came across by chance. They have some interesting and unusual items.

    Thanks for your feedback. Nigel.

  5. Please can someone measure the length of the rubber straps that lift the parcel shelf when you open the boot and let me know how long they are. Mine gone. No longer available from VW. Have found someone who reckons they have new pattern ones that are right. Cheap, £3.73 the pair plus P&P.

Most breakers want to sell the shelf and straps together, won't sell their straps only. Don't know how many people need them.

If they are correct/right, I'll post where to get them on here.

    Thanks.

  6. Aaargh, you know who I am, scarey! What, at your rates John? Phew!! I've got a few days to save JM a few quid......but there again I don't want to mess up his interior. It had occured to me to add it to the list and it probably will be. AND I can't get the bonnet stay out, so that is on the list as well JM. Hope you can get it all done in 2 days.

Others, please ignore Mr Mitchell and tell me how to do it!

  7. Peachers, have a look at these guys called Veedubmachine, based in Redruth, Cornwall.

    http://www.veedubmachine.co.uk/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=101

This links to their specific Corrado parts items. They have some quite neat things.

Bought some bits the other day including their DEPO clear side indicators.

Result: Tight fit to body, used a bit of copper ease, went in fine, had to push hard but didn't snap their fixings, solid, look great. They include the amber bulbs. The fit of the bulb holder into the unit was tacky, but don't think the buld holders will fall back into the wing cavity.

They cost £13.78 inc VAT - did not look on fleabay, don't like it.

They do smoked ones as well.

The stainless 'VW' tyre valve caps are quality....if you like that sort of thing!!!

  8. The hinges in the two shelves each side in the boot (with the rear speakers in), into which the parcel shelf 'spigots' pop, are smashed off. Got some used OK ones. Went to take out existing and found you can't get at one of the nuts - front one against body, speaker plastic housing is in the way from the boot area.

How do you get that nut off? Looks like you have to take out the side trim panel in the rear seat area and get at it from the front (that is kneeling in the rear seat area).

Is that what you need to do to get the shelf off?

How otherwise without disturbing the trim panel?

How do you get that trim panel off?

Do all the clips break when you do take it off?

If so, can you get replacement clips?

How do you get it back on fitting properly?

The car has leather and I don't want to screw it. I hate messing with trim panels, as I'm useless at it and always smash all the clips and can't get them to fit back in properly afterwards. HELP!

  9. Just helped a mate buy a 1994 VR6, 129,000 miles but 1 owner/driver. He had it as company car until 1997, bought it from the company in 1997. Incredible amount of service history. Currently running beautifully.

    My background as a commentator:

My son had one (helped him buy it) and his best mate has one, my mate now has one (helped him buy it) and I have had a 1997 Golf VR6 for 3 years.

    Comments:

Looking at the service history of the one my mate has bought', it is full of invoices to fix 'rough running'.

It also has loads of fixes for running too hot....and had a new rad in 2007.

For the rough running, it has had:

    coilpack x 2

loads of plug leads and plugs

    Air mass meter

    lambda probe x 2

    throttle body cleaned x 3

    air valve cleaned x 2

    idle valve cleaned x 3

    Lambda sensor x 2

My car is OBD2 and has run faultlessly for my 20,000 miles only needing a coilpack (they bake and lose their insulation - don't be tempted by a 'fake' one, by a VW OEM one).

Problem is the Corrado is OBD1. Seems most of the arrangement on the inlet side just don't last without a lot of attention, regularly.

A lot of posts are about 'letting you down'. I doubt a Corrado VR6 will. It will just have a lot of little niggles especialy on the intake/fueling side and will run rough.

The other main issues that you find on the forum are coolant running temp and oil temp.

There are many other well known and obvious issues, non of which 'let you down'.

    Sunroof

    Spoiler

    heater controls

    Electric mirrors

    (old) original alarm/immobilisor systems

    wipers are ****e

    headlights are ****e

Depends what you mean by 'letting down'. VR OBD1s appear to be a bit of a problem with 'rough running' and running too hot, water and oil. Get those fixed and you have a reliable motor. The other issues are just inconvenient.

As others have posted, they don't often let you down, as in breakdown, just don't drive as they should from time to time. To get that sorte4d can cost a bit but once done they are awesome to drive. As someone said on here...each journey in a Corrado VR6 is an event.

  10. Incredible, what a lucky guy. Pictures of the recovered car on page three are incredible. A 300,000 mile Corrado? Wow. And made it to those miles and now trashed, what a shame. Very cool that they don't have to have front number plates in the US - easier to fit an oil cooler or air con radiator!!

  11. I've got a Golf 3 Highline Mulberry. The original mat set are in a very deep purpley colour and my drives side is knackered. VW now only do them in black. I'd like to replace them with as near as possible the correct colour. Looked as if one of your swatches was a purple kind of colour?? If so, can you post a picture? And where do your swatches come from? I can get mats made up to fit by small local trimmer if I can find a vaguely appropriate colour. Otherwise it is back to boring old black!!

  12. Thanks for replies everyone. I'm going to take the car down to John for him to give it a once over and fit his headlight loom upgrade, so I'll get the shelves and indicator repeater from him. Going to post a seperate 'wanted' for the O/S fog/indicator unit. I know they are apparently rarer than hen's teeth, but worth a try!

  13. Karl, I added some additional parts further up the post which you may or may not have spotted. O/S fog/indicator (1994 car), O/S indicator repeater. Have you perhaps got the lot?

    Nigel.

  14. Hi John, thanks. Presumably the hinge part for the parcel shelf are OK both sides? How much do you want if I collect? Are you breaking a car? I only ask as I also need O/S indicator wing repeater, orange, square. Plus I also need an O/S fog/indicator unit - mine works, but it is cracked.

    Regards, Nigel Knight

  15. Peeps, you may know this guy and maybe the car. It's for sale on Pistonheads. Apparnetly it was a Storm. Wow, what a way IMO to trash and ruin a Storm. Have a look and let us all know what you think. To me it is truly horrific! If it really was a Storm, what a waste. The colour, yeach. Possibly the most tasteless thing I've ever seen, vandalised really. Anyone think it is great? Anyone think it is really horrid? Up at £6,000. Perhaps I'm just an old fart traditionalist!!

  16. My son has just put a Jetex on his VR - had a standard VW one that was knackerd. It is the cat back 2 silencer stainless system and Venom are doing them for £312.

Him and a mate fitted it in a domestic garage - just jacked up one side of the car with a couple of trolley jacks.

Fitting was very straightforward even when grovelling about on a garage floor - probably took about 2 hours to remove old and fit the Jetex, needed 2 people

Fit is perfect - no bangs or clonks, does not touch anywhere

Oval tail pipe fits neatly where it should

    It is a quality product

It must have reduced weight by about 15kgs - no 'suitcase' box for a start. It is loads lighter than the standard one.

There are no baffles - someone on here said they are baffled, but they are not, you can see straight through the silencer boxes

Gives a nice deep burble, quiet around town, no rasping, occaisional (rather satisfying) pop on overrun

Overall I'd describe it as very civilised, but rewarding when you rag it (bit hard to tell as it has a Green Cotton cone filter fitted which barks like a beast over 3,000 rpm and with the pedal down)

Don't know about power increase but it has improved throttle response and pull from low down in the rev range

The 3 silencer version can't be much louder than a standard exhaust???

When my Golf VR (sorry) needs a new exhaust, I'll defo put one of these on. That way I'll avoid joining the Citroen Saxo muppet brigade but have an exhaust that fits properly and sounds nice!!
